Taikūnai brings together protected natural heritage and tangible traces of local and partisan history. It also offers a route associated with the area and accommodation with guest rooms. You can plan your stay around your own interests: nature, archaeological history, remembrance, or a combination of these.

Pine and regional park

The Taikūnai pine stands by Lake Vilkaitis in Taikūnai and is a state-protected natural heritage tree. It is 20 metres tall, and its trunk has a circumference of 3 metres. Height and circumference are two different measurements of the same natural landmark. The Veisiejai Regional Park is also part of the geographical context: Taikūnai is among the villages located wholly or partly within the park. This means you can consider the area both as an individual protected natural heritage site and in relation to the regional park. Height describes how far the tree extends vertically; circumference measures the distance all the way around the trunk, so the figures represent different dimensions.

Archaeological history and remembrance

A wooden cross is attached to the Taikūnai pine. Beside it, a dark wooden post has been set into the ground in memory of the partisans of the Dainava district. In addition to its natural heritage status, the tree is therefore associated with a specific act of remembrance. Another site in Taikūnai is a site commemorating the battles and deaths of Lithuanian partisans; it is located in Veisiejų Eldership, in Lazdijai District. The post by the pine and this site mark different historical points of reference in the area.

The Taikūnai burial site lies on the western shore of Lake Vilkaitis, in the village. Iron axes, rings and knives were found there during road construction in 1937. This discovery gives the site a different focus from the partisan memorials: it points to a specific archaeological find and the objects unearthed there. If you would like to visit the burial site, check locally for access before your trip.

Route and accommodation

The Snaigynas–Trikojis route associated with Taikūnai is 5 kilometres long and rated easy; its Trikojis endpoint is in Taikūnai. The distance and rating answer different planning questions: five kilometres gives the distance, while the easy rating provides an indication of difficulty. Route details may change, so check local conditions before planning your trip.

Danutės sodyba in Taikūnai offers six guest rooms. Three have a private shower and toilet. If a private shower and toilet are important to you, check before your trip whether a suitable room is available; availability may change.
