Šventežeris brings together a long local history and specific cultural landmarks: a church, a local history museum, and a cross that points to Dzūkija. Lake Šventežeris is also a local point of reference: it is accessible from the north.
Local History and Churches
An early turning point was the grant of the area of present-day Šventežeris: in 1511, Sigismund the Elder gave the area to J. Radziwill. J. Radziwill established the Seiriyai manor there; the area was later called Šventežeris. In 1645, the parish, manor, and settlement of Šventežeris were mentioned. These references relate to different aspects of local history, from the area and manor to the parish.
The construction history of the religious buildings can also be placed in chronological context. The settlement’s first religious building was a Reformed Evangelical church built in 1598. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1882. The two dates refer to different buildings and add to the historical references to the manor, parish, and settlement. Anyone interested in the history of Šventežeris will find both early and later milestones here.
Museum and Dzūkija Tradition
Šventežeris has a local history museum. A cross in the settlement reflects the cross-carving traditions of the Dzūkija region. Together with the churches, these places offer different perspectives on cultural heritage: local history, religious architecture, and regional craftsmanship. This makes it possible to shape your visit around your travel interests without reducing the settlement’s history to a single building.
Cultural Sites in Šventežerio Eldership
The Prelomčiškė Hillfort is located in Šventežerio Eldership and is associated with the heritage of the Yotvingians. They lived there in the 13th century; a large Yotvingian settlement also stood at the foot of the hillfort. From the summit, you can see a panorama of Lake Dusia. The Oninės festival is held at the hillfort every July; the exact date may vary. Archaeological history, views across the landscape, and an annual festival come together at this named location.
Mikyčiai Hillfort dates to the first millennium. An associated settlement at its foot covers 0.2 hectares. The hillfort’s dating and the settlement’s area provide two different points of reference for the archaeological history of this place.
Another cultural site in Šventežerio Eldership is the Chapel of the Cross of Saint Mary, Queen of the Rosary. It is a Catholic pilgrimage site on the southern shore of Lake Dusia, near the Sutrė stream.
The Lake and Choosing Where to Stay
