Košická Belá combines its setting above the Hornád with a folklore group that preserves the traditions and songs of the village. Two different details are also available for planning hikes: a circular route with a stated duration and a marked connecting trail with a stated length.

Location and Forest Landscape

The municipality lies in the Hornád Valley, on a small plateau above the river, at the northern tip of the Košice Basin area. The river and the plateau clearly define its geographical setting. The landscape around Košická Belá is shaped by deciduous forests on the eastern limestone slopes of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Coniferous forests are found only in insignificant areas. The information therefore describes two different aspects of the surroundings: the Hornád places the village in the valley, while the composition of the forests helps characterize the slopes.

Folklore and Church

The Pantľička folklore group collects, preserves and presents traditions and songs from Košická Belá. Its traditional customs programmes include “Večarki pri višivaňu”, “Večar na Ondreja”, “Ľetohoruce”, “Stupaňekapusti” and “Kecbabispominaju”. Wedding customs are also presented. Collecting and preserving go hand in hand with the public presentation of songs and customs: the village’s cultural identity is shaped by specific traditions, not just by a general label of folklore.

Another way to explore the village’s history is the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. It is a modern three-nave building dating from 1938 to 1941. The term “three-nave” describes its architectural layout; the years indicate when it was built. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. As its condition may change, it is worth checking again before planning your trip. Three naves divide the interior.

Hiking Trails and Navigation

A circular hike to Folkmarská skala starts and ends in the district of Košické Hámre, which belongs to the municipality of Košická Belá. The stated duration of this hike is 4 hours and 15 minutes. Another route starts in Košická Belá: the locally marked yellow connecting trail to Nemcova dolka is 3.5 kilometres long and joins the Legionnaires’ Trail there. The Roztoky educational trail is also located within the municipality’s cadastral area.

The two hiking routes can be distinguished by the planning detail given for each: the circular hike is described by its duration, while the connecting trail is described by its length and connection to the Legionnaires’ Trail. This can help you decide whether to include a loop or a route linking up with another trail in your plans. Check the route description again before setting out.
