The Chüy Region of Kyrgyzstan offers a range of ways to explore: nature trails and horseback tours, winter sports, and culture and history. In Chon-Kemin Nature Park, the landscape ranges from semi-deserts to glaciers. The protected natural complex rises from about 1,400 to 2,800 metres—a considerable elevation range within a single natural area.

Landscapes and Tours in Chon-Kemin

Chon-Kemin National Park has coniferous and mixed forests. Six plant species and 21 animal species listed in the Red Book are found there, including the snow leopard, maral deer and golden eagle. Activities in Kemin District include trekking, horseback riding, rafting, ethnotourism and recreational tours.

In the Chon-Kemin Valley, you’ll find hiking trails, forest paths and viewpoints in the foothills. Tours often last one to two days and may include overnight stays in guesthouses. Horseback routes take you through sections of the valley, forests and foothills; some itineraries combine the ride with a visit to Burana Tower. Experienced travellers can also take multi-day horseback routes in the Chon-Kemin area, crossing mountain pastures, valleys and lakes and learning about nomadic culture.

Rafting options also vary: the Chüy Valley has moderate stretches, while the water flows quickly in Boom Canyon. Two-day tours are available on the Chon-Kemin and Chüy rivers. Details about the duration and river section can help you distinguish this experience from shorter excursions.

Plan Ahead for Winter Activities

Red Rocks is a 38-hectare mountain recreation base described as operating in winter. Ski Tatyr has a cable car and is described as operating year-round. Check whether both are operating before your trip. The Orlovka ski area has nine runs of varying difficulty, suited to beginners and experienced skiers.

Archaeology, Crafts and Encounters

Ancient settlements in the Chüy Region include Suyab, Nevaket and Ak-Beshim; the region’s historical sites also include Balasagun and the remains of Burana Tower. Suyab is associated with the history of early medieval Central Asia and ancient civilizations. Cities along the Silk Road in the Chüy Valley were centres of trade, crafts, science and cultural exchange.

Krasnaya Rechka is associated with the World Heritage site of Navaket and hosts the annual Ethnic Friendship Festival. The festival showcases local ways of life, food, dance and music. Kyrgyz, Russian and Turkish homes welcome tourists. Check the specific event dates before your trip.

Regional workshops include felt-making, cooking, wearing traditional clothing and building a traditional yurt. In a ceramics-painting activity with a view of Burana Tower, you can paint unglazed ceramics and take them home. These activities offer different focuses: hands-on crafts, cultural practices or a visit to historical sites.

Cuisine and Seasonal Experiences

The cuisine of the Chüy Valley is connected with Kyrgyz, Uyghur, Dungan, Russian and other local traditions. A strawberry farm near Burana Tower combines picking strawberries with tea and traditional sweets served by the farmers. This experience is available from May to the end of October; confirm seasonal availability before your visit.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

In the wider Chüy Region, the A365 heads east towards the Issyk-Kul Region. International visitors often arrive via Manas International Airport or take the overland Almaty–Korday route. Land connections link Bishkek with other regions of Kyrgyzstan. Some towns in the Chüy Region have direct connections to Issyk-Kul or the Kazakh border; other destinations are usually reached via the capital.

When planning excursions to Chon-Kemin, keep in mind that tours often last one to two days and may include overnight stays in guesthouses. For a festival visit, the specific dates matter; for the strawberry experience, the seasonal window is important.
