Aqtau brings together coastal routes, the city’s history and activities on the Caspian Sea. A striking contrast lies between the rocky Skalistaya Tropa coastal route and the cultural and historical themes of the museum, the Mayak Lighthouse and the Beket-Ata Mosque. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on coastal walks, culture or activities on the water.
Skalistaya Tropa and Activities on the Water
Skalistaya Tropa runs from the Caspian Riviera area in Microdistrict 4 along the rocky shore to the yacht club in Microdistrict 1. Caves and rocks along the coast have been developed into a natural museum. The route thus combines a clearly defined coastal path with the natural formations of the shore. If you want to explore Aqtau on foot, this is a clearly described coastal walk.
There are various activities on the water to choose from. Typhoon Diving Center in Aqtau lets you book introductory dives and offers diving tours on the Caspian Sea. SeaCube rents out boats, jet skis, yachts and pontoon boats; watercraft can be rented with or without a captain. SeaCube operates at the pier of Breeze Yacht Club in Aqtau. You can choose a watercraft and book a date online. Before making specific plans, check the current types of watercraft, terms and availability.
City History and Notable Buildings
The Abish Kekilbayuly Mangystau Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum covers Abish Kekilbayuly, modern Kazakhstan, general history and archaeology, the Mangystau oil industry and the history of Aqtau in its exhibitions. The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan is also among its subjects. Temporary exhibitions focus on ethnography, wildlife and the ancient Tethys Ocean. The museum therefore places the history of the city and region alongside archaeological, national and natural history topics.
The Mayak Lighthouse stands on the roof of an eleven-storey residential building, 73 metres above sea level. Built in 1974, it is considered an emblem and calling card of Aqtau. The Beket-Ata Mosque in the city centre marks a different point in history: its construction began in 2000, ahead of the 250th anniversary of Beket Ata. The lighthouse stands out for its location and design, while the mosque is notable for the documented start of construction in relation to that anniversary.
Mangystau as a Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Mangystau has its own sacred and historical focus: the serial UNESCO World Heritage property Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of Mangystau was added to the World Heritage List in 2026. It consists of five sacred sites carved into the rock and adjoining extensive burial grounds. The sites date from the 12th to the 18th centuries and have been important pilgrimage destinations for centuries.
Other regional examples offer a different focus. Kyzylkala is a medieval city associated with preserved rock carvings by nomadic tribes dating from the 10th century. The Tamshaly natural area includes rocky gorges and a freshwater spring, where water drips over the stones; it is used for ecotourism and recreation in nature. In Kapamsay Canyon, a grove of mulberry trees and hawthorns lies inside a grotto.
