Qysylorda brings together museums, religious buildings, monuments, and parks, offering a range of cultural highlights. When planning your trip, you can choose based on whether you are primarily interested in history, art, urban green spaces, or events. Each place tells a story about different periods and subjects—from the history of Kazakh yurts to buildings dating from the 19th century.

Museums, Art, and Kazakh Traditions

The Kyzylorda Open University Museum features the panorama “Kazakh village in Zhailau.” The museum also presents Kazakh traditions and customs, as well as a photo exhibition on the history of Kazakh yurts. This places both a specific landscape scene and everyday culture and the architectural history of yurts in the spotlight. Art enthusiasts can visit the S. Aitbayev Art Gallery at 2/1 Isa-Toktybayev Street, near Korkyt-Ata Park. Kyzylorda is also associated with a painting tradition; the gallery itself, however, should not be equated with the entire history of painting in the city.

Buildings and Monuments from Different Periods

The Aitbay Mosque was built in 1878 and is considered a 19th-century monument. Since independence, it has served Muslims as a place of worship. The main Christian place of worship in Kyzylorda is also located on Toktybayev Street. Together, these two places offer different reference points for the city’s religious architecture.

Monuments also highlight distinct historical moments: the monument to Jalantos Bakhadur was unveiled in 2010 on Zhibek-Zholy Street in Kyzylorda. The monument to Bukharbai Estekbayuly was erected in 2012, and the one to Zhankozha Nurmukhameduly in 2014. A monument to Mustafa Shokay was created in 2018; that same year, the monument to Batyrkhan Shukenov was erected in B. Shukenov Park. Kyzylorda’s railway station building, built in 1905, is a historic landmark.

Parks and Cultural Events

Green spaces and recreational activities offer a different perspective on city life. The First President’s Park extends along the banks of the Syr Darya. Central Park has a Ferris wheel, a skate park, and various rides. Their highlights differ: one is defined by its park and riverside setting, while the other combines rides with a skate park. The Kyzylorda Philharmonic gives concerts featuring Kazakh and international music at the Palace of Arts. These concerts complement the historical and museum-related themes with a musical offering.

More to Explore in the Wider Qysylorda Destination

Beyond the city’s highlights, the wider Qysylorda destination also offers historical and natural attractions. The Barsakelmes State Nature Reserve was established on December 10, 1939, on Barsakelmes Island, which at the time was located almost in the central part of the Aral Sea. Since July 29, 2020, the reserve has also included the 2,300-hectare “Delta” section at the mouth of the Syr Darya, where it flows into the Small Aral Sea, known for its unique biodiversity. The Barsakelmes Biosphere Reserve was added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2016.

The history of ancient settlements also shapes the region. Zhankent, also known as Yangikent, was one of the capitals of the Oghuz state in the 9th to 11th centuries. The ancient settlement has official status as a cultural heritage site of national significance and was located on the lower Syr Darya; it was an important administrative and trading center for the Oghuz. Chirik-Rabat was an ancient trading center on the Silk Road, where crafts and agriculture developed. Its fortifications included a moat 40 meters wide and 4.5 meters deep.

Another regional highlight is the Kambash recreational area on Lake Kambash. Motorboats, inflatable boats, catamarans, and jet skis are available there; check current availability before planning your visit. This way, you can choose hotels to match the topics that interest you most in Qysylorda.
