The Blue Mahoe Trail connects Holywell’s main picnic area with the visitor centre and ranger station over a distance of 350 metres. The walk passes through secondary forest and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Holywell is located in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. This means that, alongside the longer routes, visitors can also consider a short trail with named endpoints.

Gardens with Different Histories

The Cinchona Botanical Gardens were established in 1868. From there, views extend to Strawberry Hill, the Blue Mountains, the Liguanea Plains and Kingston. Cinchona’s history also includes its former cultivation: Asian tea was grown on forty acres, and there was also a garden with European crops. Its views and cultivation history give the site two distinct botanical and landscape highlights.

At the Hope Botanical Gardens, you will find a collection of endemic and exotic plants. The named garden areas include a grove of Cassia siamea planted in 1907, a cactus garden, a bougainvillea walk, annual gardens, sunken gardens and a lily pond. The variety of areas ranges from individual plant groupings to landscaped garden spaces.

Hiking Trails by Length and Terrain

The Shelter Trail runs 600 metres one way through tropical cloud forest. It is an easy walking trail with little elevation gain and is also suitable for a short walk with small children. The Oatley Mountain Trail offers a different experience: the 1.2-kilometre loop has a steep ascent and some sections that are somewhat challenging. It leads to Oatley Mountain Peak, at 1,400 metres above sea level.

The 1.3-kilometre Waterfall Trail also has a steep ascent; some sections are considered moderately difficult. When comparing it with the Oatley Mountain Trail, distance is not the only factor to consider: the Oatley is described as a loop leading to a peak at a specified elevation, while the Waterfall Trail is characterised by its steep ascent and partially moderate difficulty.

These details help distinguish the different trail profiles without assuming a walking time for the longer routes. The Shelter Trail is the short, easy option specifically described as suitable for a walk with small children; the other two trails include steep ascents. Choose a route that fits your plans.

Heritage and Other Places to Visit

At Clydesdale National Forest Park, walks pass beneath the canopy of various trees. The site was once a coffee processing facility; historical features still visible there include structures known as “barbecues” and a water wheel. Nature and the site’s former use are directly connected here.

At Devon House, visitors can tour the mansion and shop at gift stores. Check whether these offerings are available at the time of your visit. This lets you include the described visitor activities in your plans without assuming they are currently available.

Jamaica in a Broader Context

Across the wider destination of Jamaica, the Blue and John Crow Mountains also tell the story of the Maroons. The area provided refuge for Maroons, formerly enslaved people, and preserves tangible cultural heritage connected with Maroon history, including the Nanny Town Heritage Route. The area is also among the world’s most irreplaceable protected areas for the conservation of amphibians, birds and mammals.

Coffee and cuisine also connect to Jamaica as a whole: authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is grown exclusively at elevations between 3,000 and 5,500 feet in the cloud forests of the Blue and John Crow Mountains range. Reggae is a central part of Jamaican culture. Ackee and Saltfish is considered the national dish and a popular local breakfast; depending on the season, it is served with items including fried dumplings, callaloo, green bananas, avocado and plantains.
