Explore Vicenza through Palladio’s architecture: the UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises the city of Vicenza and 23 buildings designed by Andrea Palladio. But the city also offers other ways to explore its history: theatres, museums, a historic sanctuary, parks and regional cuisine. You can tailor your discoveries to your interests – whether architecture, art collections, religious heritage or local food culture.
Palladio’s Architecture, from the Stage to City Views
The Basilica Palladiana is Vicenza’s landmark. Its Serlian loggias, designed by Palladio, surround the medieval Palazzo della Ragione. On the terrace, a monumental viewpoint sits in the heart of the city: from here, the 360-degree view stretches across the historic old town and the Berici Hills. Architecture and panorama meet directly at this spot. The terrace is fully accessible to people with mobility impairments; a dedicated lift provides convenient access to the second floor. Check this facility again before your trip.
The Teatro Olimpico brings together architectural history and theatre and music productions. It is considered the world’s first covered masonry theatre. Palladio built it between 1580 and 1585; it was inaugurated upon its completion. As the programme changes, check the dates if you would like to plan your trip around a particular performance.
Museums and Stories of the City
At the Palladio Museum, original Palladio drawings are displayed alongside models and videos. A dedicated section explores Vicenza’s silk production and international silk trade. The history of a craft thus complements the perspective on architecture. The Venice–Milan railway line takes you to Vicenza station; from there, the museum is a ten-minute walk. Check the connection and walking time before your trip.
Palazzo Chiericati also brings together architectural history and collections: Andrea Palladio designed the building in 1550 for Girolamo Chiericati. Today, the city museum preserves and displays more than 35,000 works there, dating from the 13th to the 20th century, including paintings, sculptures, prints and applied arts. The display may change; the museum is accessible to people with disabilities. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip.
At the Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza, you encounter another chapter in the city’s history. The museum collects memories of events and figures from Italian history connected with Vicenza’s historical events. It is located in Villa Guiccioli on Colle Ambellicopoli, where the people of Vicenza resisted in defence of the city in 1848. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities; check the visiting arrangements in advance.
The church of Santa Corona was founded in 1270 and was the centre of a Dominican monastic complex. Its crypt contains the Valmarana Chapel, which Palladio designed for Antonio Valmarana in 1576. Here, another building offers a glimpse of both the history of a monastic complex and Palladio’s architectural work.
Monte Berico and Religious Heritage
The history of the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico is linked to Marian apparitions on 7 March 1426 and 1 August 1428. In 1578, Andrea Palladio enlarged the sanctuary with a large square nave. From Vicenza’s historic centre, you can reach it on foot via Viale X Giugno or by climbing the 192-step Scalette di Monte Berico. Check the route conditions before setting out.
The sanctuary also houses a museum of sacred art. Its collection includes more than 500 artefacts dating from the 14th to the 21st century, including Greek, Russian and Neo-Byzantine post-Byzantine icons. The displays may be rearranged. A visit therefore offers a different way to explore religious heritage from the history and architecture of the sanctuary itself.
Parks and Regional Cuisine
For a change of scenery from buildings and collections, Campo Marzo and the Giardini Salvi are among Vicenza’s historic parks. In Parco Querini, a tree-lined avenue leads to a small temple surrounded by greenery. Each of the three places offers its own character: historic parkland in one, a path through a tree-filled setting in another.
Bacalà alla vicentina is also part of the city’s history: the dish has been part of Vicenza’s culinary tradition for more than 500 years and was developed by the people of Vicenza as a local speciality. Recipes and offerings at individual restaurants may vary. Architecture, religious history, parkland and cuisine thus give you different ways to discover Vicenza according to your own interests.
