Belluno combines art and architectural history with opportunities to spend time outdoors. When planning a stay, it is worth considering whether you are mainly interested in collections and historic buildings, or whether you would also like to include a hike lasting around three and a half hours. The city offers a range of themes, without requiring you to follow a single set itinerary.
Art in the Palazzo and Cathedral
After a restoration project that began in 2012, Palazzo Fulcis De Bertoldi became the new home of the Civic Museums of Belluno’s historical and artistic collections. The palazzo has around 3,000 m² of exhibition space across five levels. For travelers interested in culture, it brings together a specific architectural history and its role as a museum.
Belluno’s new cathedral also offers a distinct way to explore the city’s history: construction began in 1517, based on a design by Tullio Lombardo. The cathedral houses works by Cesare Vecellio, Andrea Meldolla, known as lo Schiavone, Jacopo Da Ponte, Andrea Brustolon and Gaspare Diziani. Its architecture and artworks provide two different starting points for exploring the building.
Traces of the city’s history
For almost four hundred years, Palazzo dei Rettori was the seat of the Venetian rectors who governed Belluno and its territory. Porta Dojona preserves a different, precisely dated detail: in 1289, Vecello da Cusighe built its inner arch for the bishop and count Adalgerio da Villalta. Together, the two buildings illustrate different aspects of Belluno’s past: its long-standing administrative role and a medieval building commission.
Visitors who want to explore the old town by theme can choose from five walks created as part of the Scoprire Belluno project. The thematic structure offers different starting points for a stroll, without requiring a particular itinerary. Check the availability of the walks before your trip.
Getting there and spending time outdoors
Belluno is served by the Padua–Montebelluna–Feltre–Belluno and Venice–Treviso–Conegliano–Ponte nelle Alpi–Belluno railway lines. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date; no specific departure times or service frequencies are provided here.
For a hike, the route from Col di Roanza to the summit of Monte Serva via Trail 517 is a clearly identified option. It takes about three and a half hours. Monte Serva lies within a national park. The approximate duration makes it easier to include the hike as a separate activity in your stay.
In the Valle dell’Ardo, some trails are part of the Club Alpino Italiano trail network and are open to hikers. This offers a different way to experience nature from the specific hike along Trail 517: here, the focus is on several trails within a network, rather than a single route with the stated duration. As trail conditions can change, check the condition of your chosen route before setting out. This can help you decide whether to focus your plans on a themed city visit or time on the trails.
