From the Camminamenti sulle Mura, you can look both inward and outward; from the south side, the view turns towards Chianti. Monteriggioni brings together these perspectives on the Borgo with a rich defensive history, museum exhibits and routes in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether architectural history, museum visits, or trails and wine should take priority.

Defensive Walls and History

The Republic of Siena founded the Castello di Monteriggioni in the second decade of the 13th century to defend its border against the rival city of Florence. The walls extend for about 570 metres along the hilltop; the fortifications include 14 imposing towers. The town’s history can therefore also be explored through its defensive architecture: the fortifications and their scale reflect their original defensive purpose.

The Camminamenti sulle Mura offer views of both the inside and outside of the Borgo. On the south side, they overlook Chianti. Check the current access rules for the wall walkways before your visit.

The Parish Church on the Main Square

The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta stands in the Borgo’s main square. Built in the 13th century, it has an original façade from that period. The church also preserves a bell dating from 1299. The construction date, façade and bell give visitors several specific points of historical interest on the main square, without focusing solely on the defensive history of the Castello.

Two Museums, Two Historical Perspectives

The educational tour “Monteriggioni in arme” presents the fortress’s history across four rooms. On display are faithful reproductions of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, as well as models of historical siege equipment and techniques. Visitors can handle and try on some weapons and pieces of armour. If you plan to take part in these interactive activities, check the current access and visitor rules before your visit.

The MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni offers a different perspective on the past. It is located in the monumental complex of Abbadia Isola, a former monastery dating from 1001, a few kilometres from Monteriggioni. The museum traces the history of the Monteriggioni area from the Middle Ages back to prehistoric times. While “Monteriggioni in arme” focuses on the fortress’s history, the MaM looks further back in time. The two museums therefore differ mainly in their respective focus.

Routes and Landscape in the Area

The Monteriggioni area has numerous historical and nature trails for outdoor activities, including walking and cycling routes, as well as the Via Francigena. One specific cycling route runs from Castellina Scalo to the Colonna di Monteriggioni, a well-known rest stop at the foot of the Castello. Check the current route conditions before setting out by bike.

The Montagnola Senese is another nearby natural area. It is classified both as a Site of Community Importance (S.I.C.) and a Site of Regional Interest (S.I.R.). Its landscape includes coppiced woodland with holm oak, downy oak and maple; chestnut groves can be found at higher elevations. The area also has numerous natural caves. These natural features offer a different way to explore the area from the architectural history of the Borgo.

Wine, Local Produce and Getting There

Monteriggioni has wine cellars where you can taste Chianti Classico DOCG and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG. Check the availability of individual wineries before your trip. Typical local products also include saffron, cheese, honey and grappa. The culinary offering thus includes both named wines and other regional products.

The nearest train station is in Castellina Scalo, a few kilometres from Monteriggioni, on the Empoli–Siena railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check timetables and connections before your trip.
