Pomonte offers trails in the Valle di Pomonte, coastal destinations around dell’Ogliera Beach, and cultural and historical points of interest along another trail and in the village. For planning, it helps to distinguish between the different highlights: the GTE includes both a long southern section and a single stage; by the sea, the beach and the Elviscot wreck take center stage. There is also a trail to church ruins and cultural sights in the village.
Hiking through valleys and along the ridge
The Percorso della Valle di Pomonte loop trail runs through the Valle di Pomonte. After a short section on the GTE Sud, it follows trail no. 109 and leads to the watershed with Vallebuia.
When planning your time, it is important to distinguish between the GTE’s southern section and a single stage. The southern section runs from Cavo to Pomonte and is 47 kilometers long; the stated walking time is 19 hours and 30 minutes. The stage from Poggio to Pomonte is 9.26 kilometers long and takes an average of about 4 hours and 40 minutes. This walking time applies to the Poggio–Pomonte section, not to the entire route from Cavo. Since figures in later route profiles may be revised, check the current stage itinerary before setting out.
The GTE stage from Poggio to Pomonte follows the ridge that separates the Valle di Pomonte from Vallebuia. On the southern stage between Poggio and Pomonte, two caprili (traditional stone huts) can be seen in LocalitĂ Le Mure.
The Percorso di San Bartolomeo leads to a plateau near Monte di San Bartolomeo. There you will find the ruins of a Romanesque church of the same name.
Beach, wreck and trails by the water
The first beach you reach from the village of Pomonte consists of gravel and stones rounded smooth by the sea; the water is particularly clear. Scoglio dell’Ogliera lies 200 meters offshore. The wreck of the Elviscot lies on the seabed beside it, making the rock a popular destination for divers and snorkelers.
The wreck lies at a depth of 3 to 12 meters and is clearly visible. From dell’Ogliera Beach, you can reach it by scuba diving, swimming, canoe or pedal boat. This gives you several ways to approach the same wreck.
You can also set out from Pomonte on foot or by bicycle into the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. This lets you plan your stay around trails in the national park as well as coastal destinations.
Culture in the village and along the trail
The cultural sights are spread across a named trail and the village: the Percorso di San Bartolomeo leads to the plateau with the church ruins. In Pomonte itself, portraits of Napoleon’s wives can be seen throughout an entire square. The Grande Sedile is located in the Piazzetta del Calello.
Alongside the GTE stages and coastal destinations, there are also specific cultural sights to choose from. You can plan your stay around your preferred focus: the stated walking times, the beach and wreck, or the sights along the trail and in the village.
Getting to the western GTE starting points
To reach the western GTE starting points, take the ferry to Portoferraio and then the Autolinee Toscane scheduled bus to Pomonte; the connection runs on route 116. Bus schedules and seasonal services may change, so check the latest departure times before traveling.
