At the western end of Piazzale Mascagni, Terrazza Mascagni marks one of the most significant settings along Livorno’s urban waterfront promenade. Bridges, canals and old palaces shape the waterfront; they are reflected in the still water. As you explore Livorno, alongside this waterside landscape you’ll encounter a city history brought to life in museums, fortresses and a theater. The themes also extend to natural history and the Livorno Street Art City route.
Art and history in a villa and a fortress
The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori, housed in Villa Mimbelli, mainly displays paintings dating from the mid-19th century to the 1940s. These include significant groups of works by artists from Livorno. The villa was commissioned by Francesco Mimbelli and inaugurated in 1868; many of its original frescoes and decorations have been preserved. This brings together views of the painting collection and the villa’s preserved furnishings. Check current opening hours before visiting.
The Museo della Città complements this art-historical perspective with additional collections. It opened in 2018 and is part of the Polo Culturale Bottini dell’Olio cultural center. Its holdings include Etruscan and Roman archaeological finds, mosaics, sculptures, medieval documents, frescoes, coins and memorabilia from the Risorgimento. The collection thus ranges from ancient finds to Risorgimento memorabilia, offering a different way into history from the paintings at Villa Mimbelli.
At Fortezza Vecchia, Livorno’s history is rooted in a specific structure: the fortress has a medieval core around which the urban fabric developed. Today it serves as a distinctive venue for numerous art, music and film events. Fortezza Nuova offers a different perspective: it is a public park, completely surrounded by the sea, with panoramic views of the canals in the Venezia and Pontino neighborhoods and the adjacent Piazza della Repubblica. Its old walls host numerous events every year, including art exhibitions, concerts and performances. The historical role of Fortezza Vecchia thus sits alongside Fortezza Nuova’s varied uses. Event programs may change; check the latest details for a specific date.
From the stage to natural history
The Teatro Carlo Goldoni also tells part of the city’s history: it is the only major theater in Livorno to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. The theater also has an exhibition route dedicated to Pietro Mascagni; the presentation may change. Near Terrazza Mascagni on the waterfront is the Acquario di Livorno. It has 32 tanks containing more than 1,700 animals from 300 different species. These exhibition figures may change as the aquarium is renovated.
The Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo focuses on natural sciences. Its central complex houses five exhibition areas and a planetarium. The museum devotes about 6,000 m² to natural sciences; the complex includes, among other things, a botanical garden, a historic park, a Specola, storage collections, and research and training laboratories. There is also an outdoor botanical garden with an area for aromatic plants and an ethnobotanical garden featuring old fruit varieties. Exhibition areas and scientific collections thus sit alongside gardens that showcase different plant worlds.
For art in the urban landscape, there is the Livorno Street Art City route, which takes about an hour by bicycle. Route details may change; check them before setting off. Cacciucco offers another culinary facet. It is considered a culinary tradition with a distinctive character, born of a complex blend of different knowledge, flavors and identities. To reach the Santuario di Montenero, take bus line 2 from Livorno’s main railway station to Piazza delle Carrozze, then continue by funicular. Check the connection again before your trip.
