Venegono Superiore offers different perspectives on forests and history: the Sentiero delle Tracce runs entirely through the forests of Parco Pineta; the castle, churches and villa tell stories of different building periods and uses. The forest route and historic sites appeal to different interests.

Forest Route in Parco Pineta

The Sentiero delle Tracce runs through the municipal areas of Venegono Superiore and Venegono Inferiore and entirely through the forests of Parco Pineta. Two details are important for orientation: the route passes through the areas of both municipalities, while its described alignment remains entirely within the park’s forest. If you are planning the nature side of your trip, this route provides a clearly identified reference point for further planning. Details of the current route may change, so check its course before setting out.

The Castello: Defensive Function and Original Layout

The Castello di Venegono Superiore was built to defend against Hungarian invasions. Its original layout consisted of a large walled enclosure with a defensive walkway running along the inside of the walls, a few small houses, and numerous cellars or storage rooms. Its history therefore cannot be reduced to its defensive purpose alone: the layout of the complex and its different components are also part of the Castello’s story. Those interested in fortification architecture can consider the walkway and walls together; the houses, cellars and storage rooms add further elements to the original structure.

The entrance is at Via delle Missioni 12. The ground-level entrance is also easily accessible for people with disabilities. Check the local visiting arrangements before your visit.

Two Churches, Different Building Periods

The Chiesa di San Giorgio Martire has medieval roots dating back to the late 13th century. Its layout comprises three naves, side chapels, a deep choir and a semicircular apse. Alongside its age, the layout of the church and its individual architectural features offer another perspective.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria alla Fontana represents a later building period: it was built in the late 17th century over an older church dedicated to Santa Maria. The comparison places the two churches in their historical context: one has medieval roots, while the other is a later construction built over an older church. This makes it possible to explore local religious history through different building phases without assigning both churches to the same period.

Villa La Colombara and the History of the Park

At Villa La Colombara, architectural and landscape history come together. The Cagnola family extended and altered the villa in the 19th century. It was incorporated into a romantic English park with exotic plants and a lake with a cottage. The story therefore extends beyond the building to the park’s design: the plants, lake and cottage are just as much a part of this theme as the changes to the villa. If you enjoy exploring historic places through architecture and landscape, La Colombara offers a different focus from the Castello’s military history or the churches’ building periods.
