The visitor programme at the Duomo di Milano focuses not only on restored places and works: during themed tours, restorers and specialists also explain the techniques used. This draws attention to the work behind the visible result and to how art is preserved. Programme details may change; check the current calendar before your visit.

Art venues with different stories

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie includes Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The exhibition room of the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano is located in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. A reservation is mandatory for every ticket. The visit lasts 15 minutes and is limited to a maximum of 40 people at a time. As this is an operational visitor rule, check it again before booking.

The Pinacoteca di Brera has been open to the public since 1809 and is located in the Palazzo Brera of the same name. Palazzo Reale is also a publicly accessible exhibition venue and hosts major exhibitions in Milan. Covering 7,000 square metres, it houses more than 1,500 masterpieces; loans and the exhibition programme may change. These venues offer different ways to discover the city: here, an art museum open to the public for centuries; there, a large-scale exhibition venue.

Collections, theatre and design

At MUDEC, the permanent exhibition spans three galleries and presents a selection of objects from collections from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Altogether, the collections comprise more than 7,000 objects dating from 1500 BC to the 20th century. This brings both the diversity of their geographical origins and their broad time span into focus. Collection holdings may change, and the permanent exhibition may be rearranged.

The Museo Teatrale alla Scala introduces visitors to the history of theatre and opera through portraits, busts, memorabilia and musical instruments. The Triennale Milano offers another perspective: for more than 100 years, it has brought creativity and culture together. Its facilities include a garden, restaurants and spaces for music and design; it is open to everyone. Its programmes change over time. Those interested in different forms of cultural expression will therefore find not only art collections here, but also theatre history and design.

History, views and a Milanese evening

The Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio connects its history with a religious significance that remains part of its identity today. Ambrose founded the basilica in honour of the martyrs Protasius and Gervasius, on the site of an ancient necropolis west of Milan. It is also the revered burial place of Ambrose, Milan’s patron saint. Its founding, dedication and burial place are tangible points of reference for understanding this site.

The terraces of the Duomo di Milano offer panoramic views over Milan and, in clear weather, of the mountains surrounding the Po Valley. They can be reached on foot or by lift; the highest level currently open to visitors is 45 metres above the ground. Check the current access conditions before your trip. The height and the view offer a different perspective from museum collections and interiors.

Aperitivo is also part of everyday life in Milan: a sociable ritual around sunset associated with iconic cocktails. This local tradition complements visits to art and cultural venues with a glimpse of social life. Specific venues and offerings may change.

Practical information

On Milan’s public transport, passengers can pay contactlessly with credit or debit cards, smartphones or smartwatches on the metro and on buses, trams and trolleybuses. The lowest fare is applied automatically. As this is a current transport practice, check the information before your trip.

The City of Milan’s official tourist information office at Piazza Duomo 14 provides information for planning visits, as well as details about exhibitions and event calendars. Information about this visitor service may change.
