An irregular city layout and a strictly rectilinear grid tell of two different ideas of urban planning. UNESCO describes Mantua as the renewal and expansion of an existing city; its irregular layout documents phases of development dating back to Roman times. Sabbioneta, by contrast, was laid out as a planned city in the second half of the 16th century. Its grid of right angles embodies Renaissance ideas of the ideal city. Mantua and Sabbioneta are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008 under criteria (ii) and (iii).

Urban history in city plans and architecture

The buildings also show how differently history can be read. The Palazzo Ducale developed into a palace city, with galleries, porticoes and monumental squares connecting its different parts. The Palazzo Te was built and decorated between 1525 and 1535 as a masterpiece by Giulio Romano. Here, there is more to discover than architecture: the educational program includes general or themed programs with hands-on workshops for schools, as well as guided groups for children. The Palazzo Te has a single entrance with a ramp.

The monastery complex of Polirone offers another leap back in history. Tedaldo di Canossa founded it in 1007 on an island between the Po and the Lirone River. Along with the urban landscapes of Mantua and Sabbioneta, this early foundation date shows how far apart the region’s historical reference points are: from a medieval monastery foundation to Renaissance ideas of the ideal city.

Rivers, wetlands and nature

The landscape around Mantua is shaped by the Po, Mincio, Chiese, Oglio and Secchia rivers, as well as a network of drainage and land-reclamation canals. The Paludi di Ostiglia are a distinctive natural area. The nature reserve is home to 175 bird species, belongs to the Natura 2000 network and is recognized as a wetland of international importance. The number of bird species may change with future surveys.

A green path leads from the visitor center to the observation huts. Access is free year-round on foot or by bicycle. Check the access conditions again before your visit. This lets you discover the natural area both through its protected status and the opportunities it offers for wildlife observation.

Cycling routes with different highlights

The cycling routes in the Oltrepò Mantovano cover more than 470 kilometers. The network connects villages and hamlets with historic buildings, museums, water-management structures, parks and nature reserves. These destinations show the range of subjects you can explore by bicycle; check individual connections and route conditions before setting out.

One specific route is the Ciclovia Mantova–Peschiera: it starts at Mantua railway station and follows the artificial Diversivo del Mincio canal. A branch leads to the Bosco della Fontana State Nature Reserve. Check route conditions and possible detours before setting off. The UNESCO cycling route is a separate option: for the return journey from Suzzara to Mantua, a regional train is planned, and bicycles are always permitted on board. Check the current bicycle transport rules before traveling.

On the water and in the park

I Barcaioli del Mincio offer boat trips on Lago Superiore and in the Valli del Mincio. Departures are available from Rivalta sul Mincio, Grazie di Curtatone and Mantua. As current availability has not been independently dated, check departure times with the operator in advance. One of the boats is equipped to carry people with disabilities and is fully covered against rain; confirm this equipment with the operator again before your trip.

Guided visits are another option: the Parco del Mincio offers them through its tourism and education office, in the park and at its visitor centers. Ask in advance about visiting arrangements. Whether you are interested in urban history, cycling routes, birdwatching or a boat trip, each option highlights a different aspect of culture and landscape.
