Pognana Lario lies on the eastern shore of the Como branch of Lake Como. The village combines historic centres with churches and works of art, as well as trails offering lake views and insights into the history of the Strada Regia. You can plan your stay around what interests you most: architectural and art history, a walk or summer activities by the lake.
Historic Centres and Churches
The historic centres of the hamlets feature frescoes, granite doorways and wrought-iron balconies. Pognana Lario’s own historic centre also has distinctive stone details: it has houses built from Moltrasina stone and many homes with granite elements crafted by hand. These features offer several different points of interest along the lanes, rather than focusing on a single church building.
In Rovasco, the Chiesa di San Miro was built around the 13th century. The Chiesetta di San Miro in Rovasco preserves an image of Saint Christopher and a nursing Madonna, both rare examples dating from the 13th century. In Canzaga stands the Chiesa di San Rocco, the former parish church of Pognana Lario. Its frescoes on the cross-vault are attributed to the Tuscan painter Bartolomeo De' Benzio.
The churchyard of the Parrocchia della SS. TrinitĂ offers a different view of Lake Como: it is elevated and described as a panoramic terrace overlooking the lake. The church itself was built around 1740. At the Cappella di Nera, meanwhile, a particular work of art takes centre stage: it houses a painting of the Madonna del Rosario.
Sculptures are also among the cultural discoveries in Pognana Lario. Created as part of the “Primo Simposio Internazionale di Scultura su Pietra Dorata,” they can be seen in the village. The symposium took place in Quarzano from 29 August to 7 September 1986. Art along the way and in the historic centres can therefore be explored as a distinct focus alongside the churches.
Walks and the Strada Regia
The starting points and descriptions can help you choose a route. The footpath from Pognana to Palanzo offers lake views and glimpses of old farmhouses. A walking trail from the Chiesa di San Rocco to Palanzo forms part of the Strada Regia, the old road connecting Como and Bellagio. Both routes lead to Palanzo: the first focuses on views and farmhouses, while the second connects to the historic road.
The Cappella di Nera can be reached via the Strada Regia, which connected Como with Bellagio. Another described hiking route runs from Torno to Pognana Lario and, after passing through the village centre, leads to the Chiesetta di San Miro in Rovasco. These routes have different reference points and destinations, so consider each according to the place or feature that interests you along the way.
By the Lake and Along the Way
Pognana Lario lies on Lake Como, on the eastern shore of the Como branch. The hamlets are situated along the provincial road from Como to Bellagio. Pognana Lario can be reached by car via the SP583 road, which runs from Como in the direction of Bellagio. These details provide a sense of the location and access without combining the local trails into a single circular route.
In summer, Spiaggetta di San Fedele is used for cooling off and sunbathing. This adds a seasonal lakeside option to the churches and walking trails when planning your stay. Pognana Lario’s village festivals also include the Sagra degli gnocchi. Together, these offer different reasons to choose the village: historic architecture and works of art, trails with specific destinations, and Lake Como as part of the village setting.
