Rapallo showcases its cultural heritage in a variety of places. The Ponte di Annibale is an old, single-arch stone bridge near the marina; its earliest surviving mention is in a document dated 7 April 1049. The castle, monastery ruins and collections offer further historical perspectives. If you would like to include culture in your stay, you can therefore choose how to balance architecture, art and walks.

To the Sanctuary: Cable Car or Path

The Funivia Rapallo-Montallegro connects Rapallo with the Santuario di Montallegro. Its route is 2,350 metres long and climbs 600 metres. If you are planning to use this connection for an excursion, it is advisable to check the timetable, as operating details may change. A path surrounded by greenery also leads from beyond Rapallo to the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro. This gives you two different options for planning your visit: a cable car connection and a walk.

Bridge, Monastery and Fortress

The Castello di Rapallo was built in 1546 to defend the town following the devastating raid by the Turkish pirate Dragut. It stands on a rocky base right by the sea and currently hosts art exhibitions. As the exhibition programme may change, check the latest dates before planning a specific visit. During the Feast of Madonna di Montallegro, the Castello sul Mare is symbolically set ablaze each year in a display of lights and fireworks.

The ruins of the Monastero di Valle Christi are in the San Massimo district, less than three kilometres from the seafront promenade. The monastery was founded in 1204. Open-air theatre and music performances are held on the grounds every summer; individual programmes may vary. If a performance is the reason for your visit, check the dates for that summer. Another historic stop on the seafront promenade is the Chiosco della Musica. It was inaugurated in 1929 and was designed for concerts by brass bands.

Art and Cultural Venues

The Museo Attilio e Cleofe Gaffoglio displays goldsmithing, ivory, porcelain, sculptures and paintings from the 14th to the 20th century. The collection thus spans several centuries and a range of art forms. If you would like to visit the museum, check the current visitor access in advance. Villa Tigullio houses the Biblioteca Internazionale and the Museo del Merletto. The parish church of San Michele di Pagana also contains the painting “Crocifisso coi Santi Francesco e Bernardo” by the Flemish painter Antoon Van Dyck; Francesco Orero commissioned it around 1620.

Walks and Coves

Parco Casale, a green space, is a good place for a walk. San Michele di Pagana is also within walking distance: after about two kilometres, you reach the district, where a walking path connects the three coves of Pomaro, Trelo and Prelo. This option complements the historic sites with a route that has a clear destination and several named coves. The distance given is approximate, so plan according to the route you actually intend to take.
