Eight early Christian monuments, built between the 5th and 6th centuries AD, form the core of the UNESCO World Heritage site Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna. Their art combines Greco-Roman tradition and Christian iconography with Eastern and Western styles. In Ravenna, you can encounter a range of cultural influences within a shared historical period—a common thread for your explorations.

Early Christian Heritage and Mosaic Art

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is one of Ravenna’s oldest buildings and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. Together with the early Christian monuments, it offers a window into the city’s long architectural and artistic history. Placing it in its historical period helps you view individual buildings not just as sights, but also as evidence of a cultural transition.

Another of the eight UNESCO-listed monuments is the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. It was built over an older cemetery site in the first half of the 6th century. Its original structure has been preserved, and magnificent mosaics remain in the apse. The basilica’s construction history and mosaic decoration offer two different but closely connected perspectives: you can focus both on when it was built and on its surviving artistic design.

Classe: Port City, Archaeology and Museum

The Antico Porto di Classe brings another part of the story to light. The archaeological park, covering about 10,000 m², is open to the public and showcases the ancient port and trading area of the city of Classe from the 5th and 6th centuries AD. You can explore the marked route independently; information panels accompany your visit. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour with a specialist guide in advance. This gives you two different ways to explore: on your own along the route or on a tour planned in advance.

The CLASSIS Ravenna – Museo della Città e del Territorio takes you further back in time and up to the early Middle Ages. Using archaeological materials and modern technology, it presents Ravenna’s history from its Etruscan-Umbrian origins through the Roman, Gothic and Byzantine periods. The museum is one of Italy’s most significant archaeological museums. While the park showcases Classe’s ancient port and trading area, the museum spans a broad sweep of Ravenna’s history. Museo Classis can be reached by bicycle, on foot, by bus and by car; check which options suit you before setting out.

Create Your Own Mosaics and Compare Regional Cuisine

If you’d like to do more than learn about mosaics and want to get creative yourself, you can take part in a Byzantine mosaic workshop in Ravenna. At an artisan workshop, you’ll learn traditional techniques, create your own mosaic and take your handmade souvenir home. Dates, availability and booking terms may change; check them in advance if you’re planning to attend the workshop.

Piadina Romagnola PGI also offers a tangible regional comparison. In the Ravenna area, it is about 4 to 8 mm thick and around 20 cm in diameter. This makes it thicker and smaller than the version from southern Romagna, particularly the one made in Rimini. The differences relate to size; individual recipes and producers may vary.

Activities in the Pine Forest

The San Vitale Pine Forest offers another way to experience the surrounding area. Access is coordinated and regulated by management rules. Permitted activities include hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Check the forest’s current rules before your visit. This ensures your choice of activity is guided by the conditions that apply in this forest.
