The Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi tells the story of Salerno’s culture through its design alone: the 19th-century wooden theatre has four tiers of boxes and a gallery. It was inaugurated on 15 April 1872 with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto”.

Theatre, Archaeology and Art

The history of the stage can also be read in two specific details: the inauguration date links the venue to Verdi’s opera, while the tiered boxes and gallery define the auditorium. Anyone interested in theatre architecture will find a clear starting point here: the building’s design and its historical context go hand in hand, without requiring you to plan a performance.

The Museo Archeologico Provinciale takes you beyond the city. It presents archaeological finds from the entire province of Salerno, from prehistoric times to the late Roman Empire. The wide time span makes a visit to the museum a journey through the region’s different eras. The Pinacoteca Provinciale offers another perspective on art: its painting collection ranges from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

The Pinacoteca’s permanent exhibition is spread across five rooms and includes religious depictions, landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Different subjects are presented in a manageable sequence, allowing you to move between landscape painting and portraiture, religious motifs and still lifes. Combined with the broad time span, this offers a distinctive perspective on the art collection, unlike the archaeological periods represented in the provincial museum.

Local Traces and Historical Layers

One archaeological point of interest is the Etruscan-Samnite necropolis of Fratte, which was in use from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The archaeological site of Fratte has been laid out as a park, where important exposed remains of the excavated structures are preserved and visible. The site thus combines a long historical context with visible architectural traces. Those interested in archaeology can explore not only collections here, but also a landscaped park with preserved remains.

Several eras also come together at the Palazzo Arcivescovile. It preserves a reused colonnade on the exterior, the space of an ancient Roman temple inside, and a medieval ground plan. These features represent different architectural layers of the building: ancient structural elements and spatial connections sit alongside a medieval layout. This sequence is especially interesting for understanding Salerno’s history, as the building cannot be reduced to a single period of construction.

Garden Knowledge and Christmas Light Art

The Giardino della Minerva combines its educational mission with a range of themes. Its programmes cover the history of the Scuola Medica Salernitana, botany and medicinal plants, as well as cosmetics and the identification and use of plants as food. Guided programmes to places associated with the Scuola Medica Salernitana are also available. If you would like to book one of these guided activities, check its availability beforehand.

A very different kind of discovery accompanies the Christmas festivities: Luci d’Artista has been part of Salerno’s recurring festive programme for more than two decades. Light installations appear in streets and squares. Their themes include myths and fairy tales, nature and stars, performances and emotions. The installations and themes change with each edition. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.

Landscape and Connections in the Province

The province of Salerno offers a range of perspectives beyond the city, too. The Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park is a mountainous landscape shaped by several river valleys descending towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Numerous old paths run through the park, which is also an important hub in the national hiking trail network. The landscape brings together two scales: valleys that slope down towards the sea, and trails that open up views across the wider area.

The Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno is a UNESCO cultural landscape shaped by the interaction of nature and human activity. Terraced orchards and vineyards are part of its scenery. The province of Salerno’s UNESCO World Heritage sites also include parts of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia, and the monumental Certosa di Padula.

Salerno is an important terminus in the maritime transport network for getting around the tourist destinations on the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast. Connections and service patterns may vary by season, so check current services if you plan to use them for your trip.
