Benevento lies at the confluence of the Sabato and Calore rivers. The Rocca dei Rettori rises above the valley. It consists of two connected buildings: one medieval and one Renaissance. The contrast in periods is thus reflected in two structures within the same complex. The Rocca serves as an exhibition and museum venue. Its permanent exhibitions include the “Uomini eccellenti” section and paintings by Virginia Tomescu Scrocco; there are also temporary exhibitions.

Museums: collections and new perspectives

The Museo del Sannio is the most important museum in the Province of Benevento and one of the most significant museums in Campania. Its more than 50,000 artefacts span the period from prehistory to the present day. The collection includes evidence from Samnite and Roman times, the Lombard period and the 15th to 19th centuries, as well as works by important Italian artists of the 20th century. In a single building, visitors can encounter a wide range of eras and art forms. The museum also has an extensive library with an adjoining reading room and a conference hall named after the scholar Giovanni Vergineo.

At the Museo Arcos, Egyptian finds sit alongside contemporary art. The museum houses the Egyptian section of the Museo del Sannio, with finds from the Temple of Isis dedicated to Benevento, as well as a contemporary art section. The shift between these two focuses offers a different way to explore the city’s collections than the broad historical span of the Museo del Sannio.

The Geobiolab explains the secrets of nature through virtual reality, scenographic reconstructions, “talking” machines, 3D films, photographs, exhibits and experimental laboratories. An announcement from August 2026 described the Geobiolab as temporarily closed for extraordinary maintenance work. Check whether the Geobiolab is currently open to visitors before you go. Another distinctive exhibition can be found at the MUSA – Museo della tecnica e del lavoro in agricoltura: it displays historic agricultural machinery and also serves as a multimedia educational laboratory.

Roman architecture and early medieval traces

The Arco di Traiano was built between 114 and 117 AD at the start of the new Via Traiana to commemorate and honour the reign of Emperor Trajan. Its reliefs are also arranged by side: those facing the city depict scenes of peace, while those on the opposite side show military scenes. The contrasting subjects create a clear thematic juxtaposition on the monument.

Further historical periods come together at the Complesso Monumentale di Sant'Ilario a Port'Aurea. The complex includes the former church of S. Ilario, an early medieval building. It also incorporates the remains of a building complex dating from the imperial period in the 2nd century AD.

Explore the city and region on the move

The Ciclopedonale Benevento–Vitulano runs entirely along a protected route and is suitable for everyone. Benevento is also part of the Via Francigena nel Sud. The protected route and Benevento’s place on the Via Francigena nel Sud offer different ways to explore the city and region.

Falanghina del Sannio also offers a regional perspective: the DOC grape-growing area covers the entire administrative territory of the Province of Benevento. For practical information, the Rete Museale provides details on admission prices, a combined ticket, reservations, and opening days and hours. If you plan to visit several cultural sites, this information can help you schedule your visits.
