Santa Maria Di Ricadi combines a stay by a bay with a rich coastal history. At Spiaggia di Santa Maria di Ricadi, you can snorkel in clear water; archaeological finds also tell of the Greek and Roman past. Viewpoints, coastal structures and a seasonal boat excursion connection to Tropea add to the options. When planning your trip, you can balance time by the water, historical sites and an excursion at sea.

Bay, Snorkeling and Boat Excursion

Spiaggia di Santa Maria di Ricadi lies in a bay south of the promontory of Capo Vaticano. Its clear water is suitable for snorkeling. The nearest railway station is Ricadi station. There are parking areas with facilities near the beach entrance; conditions and possible fees may vary by season. Check transport connections before your trip, and if you are traveling by car, check parking availability for your planned dates.

From May to October, a boat excursion service runs daily from Santa Maria di Ricadi (Capo Vaticano) to Tropea and back. The boarding point is in Santa Maria, at the Giudice parking area near Mondo Blu Diving. Alongside snorkeling in the bay, you can choose a trip at sea with Tropea as your destination. Timetables may change; check the times before planning your outing.

Church and Marian Shrine

The small settlement in the bay of Santa Maria has a church entrusted to the chapter of Tropea Cathedral. In the 17th century, the Chiesa di Santa Maria, also known as Maria SS. di Loreto, became a country church for the farmers and fishermen of the nearby village. In the 18th century, it was enlarged and devotion to Maria SS. di Loreto continued. The church therefore reflects both its original role in village life and its later expansion.

The Santuario di Santa Maria Lauretana is a diocesan Marian shrine. Its feast days include Easter Monday and August 15. If you would like to include one of these dates in your travel plans, check the specific arrangements in advance. The shrine also features an artistic detail: the Porta del mare is a bronze door designed by Vincenzo Varone of the Accademia dell’Aquila and blessed in 2008.

Greek and Roman Traces

A Greek settlement stood on the northern promontory of the bay and was in use from the 5th century to the first decades of the 3rd century BC. A large Roman amphora depot dating from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC was discovered in the bay in the 1980s. A harbor is also thought to have existed in the bay, possibly identifiable with the Portus Herculis mentioned by Strabo. This connection remains a historical hypothesis.

At the nearby Museo archeologico e paleontologico in Santa Domenica, amphorae of various types and kadoi from the bay’s archaeological depot are on display. The museum’s archaeological tour also covers the Greek settlement of Torre Santa Maria. A visit to the museum therefore offers a different way to explore the finds than viewing the bay itself: here, the focus is on objects and their interpretation.

Views and Coastal History

From the nearby Belvedere del Capo, you can see the Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina, the Sicilian coast and Mount Etna. The nearby Museo del Mare in Capo Vaticano has a different historical focus: it is housed in a former naval observation post that served as a daytime lighthouse until the mid-20th century. If you plan to visit the museum, check current visitor information in advance.

Coastal defenses are also part of the story at several locations. The nearby Belvedere dei Cannoni was a military site during the First and Second World Wars; the base structure of a gun emplacement is all that remains. Torre Ruffa is the only surviving one of four coastal towers in the Capo Vaticano area. For another perspective on the coastal landscape, compare it with the nearby Formicoli area: the seabed there consists mainly of granite rocks and is rich in fauna.
