220 display cases across four exhibition levels: the permanent exhibition at the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia tells the story of Calabria from prehistory to the Roman era. The Riace Bronzes are Greek bronze sculptures dating from the 5th century BC. Their dating places them in antiquity; the exhibition spans the historical arc through to the Roman era.

Layers of Art and History

The Palazzo Piacentini houses the Museo Archeologico di Reggio Calabria (MArRC) and was the first palace built exclusively to house a museum exhibition. On level −1 of the MArRC, you will find the entrance to the Hellenistic necropolis. These details offer specific spatial and historical points of reference as you explore the museum building and its surroundings.

The Pinacoteca Civica offers a different history of collecting. It preserves and displays mainly artworks owned by the municipality of Reggio Calabria. The older works date from the 15th to the 19th century and originate from the collections of the former Museo Civico. The exhibition route includes eleven rooms, divided into five sections. On a single visit, you can therefore encounter both a collection with a long history and a clearly structured presentation of the works on display.

The Castello Aragonese also brings together different layers of history. It was founded in the Byzantine period, between the 9th and 11th centuries. Among the parts visible today are two round towers topped with battlements, dating from the Aragonese period, in the south and connected by a defensive wall. Today, the Castello hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events; check the current programme if you are planning a visit.

Urban Spaces and Cultural Experiences

The Arena dello Stretto is a modern theatre inspired by the ancient theatrical tradition of Magna Graecia. It hosts film, music and theatre events. Music and theatre events are part of the city’s summer season, while film screenings are not limited to this season. If you are planning to attend an event, checking the latest dates will help you plan.

The Villa Comunale Umberto I is home to authentic Roman columns. The Parco Urbano – Il Tempietto on the Lungomare Italo Falcomatà has a different character: this spacious, revitalised area is intended for sport, art, culture and leisure. Together, these places show different sides of public life in the city, from historic relics to a versatile urban space.

The Lungomare Falcomatà is a natural extension of the historic centre of Reggio Calabria. Cyclists will also find a specific point of reference: the Gambarie–Reggio Calabria stage of the Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria reaches the Arena dello Stretto via a coastal cycle path; the Ciclovia ends at the Lungomare Falcomatà. As route conditions and maintenance can change, check the latest information before planning a ride.

The Coast and the Wider Region

Punta Pellaro on the Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria is suitable for kitesurfing. Check conditions and services locally. For a more leisurely culinary stop, Reggio Calabria has numerous gelaterie, particularly in the old town and along the Lungomare.

The wider surroundings also offer a broader perspective on the region. A large part of the area lies within the Parco Nazionale dell’Aspromonte. There are pine forests on the Tyrrhenian side and beech forests on the Ionian side. In the wider region, the Costa Viola is known for the purplish reflections of its waves at sunset and for its terraced slopes above the sea. These landscapes belong to the wider regional context, not to the places described within the city limits.

Travel Planning Tips

Piazza Garibaldi station is served by national long-distance trains and also offers regional train connections. The airport is connected to Reggio Calabria by ATAM buses and can also be reached by train via Reggio Calabria Aeroporto station. As transport services and timetables may change, it is worth checking them before your trip.

These topics can help guide your own planning without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
