Discover Belmonte Calabro through its architectural history and the landscape between the hilly hinterland and the sea. The historic townscape is dominated by the castle, fortifications and religious buildings; the Veri River and the Oasi Blu Isca marine area add their own landscape features to this picture. You can decide whether you are particularly interested in the winding old town, the history of its buildings, or the nature around the river and sea.

Old Town on the Rocky Hill

The historic center lies on a rocky hill and developed around the castle. Old houses and narrow, winding streets with steps shape the townscape. Much of the old town is still surrounded by defensive walls. Historically, three gates led into the town and to the castle: the Porta di Mare, the Porta di Terra and a side gate to the north. This northern side gate is still visible. The walls, gates and castle give the center a clear connection to its history of fortification.

Architectural History and Churches

Individual buildings bring different periods of the town’s history to life. The Palazzo del Rivellino was built in 1627 as a fortification around an existing square tower. Torino Ravaschieri had built this tower in 1579. The Convento dei Cappuccini was established in 1606 at the behest of Maria Ravaschieri. Its architectural features include a cloister with a colonnade and vaulted ceilings, a well in the middle of the courtyard, and a portico with two old sundials. The comparison reveals two different architectural functions: the Palazzo is primarily a fortification, while the monastery is arranged around its cloister and courtyard.

The churches also differ in their history and furnishings. The Chiesa del Purgatorio dates from the 14th century and was Belmonte Calabro’s parish church until 1585. It houses a blue silk banner shaped like a triangular sail, which was associated with the Rosary procession of a Rosary confraternity made up of fishermen. The Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta is a 16th-century religious building beside the castle esplanade. Above its main altar hangs an oil painting by Francesco Basile from 1794–1795 depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The Chiesa del Carmine adds another historical reference to this architectural story: it is associated with a monastery dating from 1562. Beneath the floor of its apse is a crypt from 1586 containing the tomb of Torino and the first Ravaschieri. The churches therefore stand out for different details, from an earlier parish status and a processional banner to a monastery and crypt.

Culture and Landscape

The Centro Culturale Informatizzato includes a municipal museum that recalls the history and culture of the people of Belmonte Calabro. Another notable structure is the Mausoleo Michele Bianchi: its 35-meter-high column has an internal spiral staircase leading to a viewing terrace. The two sites offer different points of interest: one focuses on the cultural history of the local population, the other on a tall column with an internal staircase and terrace.

The seven-kilometer-long Veri River offers a clear route from the hilly hinterland to the sea. Along its course, it passes through a terraced landscape. The Oasi Blu Isca marine area around the Scogli di Isca offers a different perspective. It was established in 1991 and is managed by the WWF and its associated CEAM. The river and the marine area thus represent two different scales: a course through the hinterland and a protected marine area near Belmonte Calabro.

The Pomodoro di Belmonte is part of the local produce tradition. It is considered a typical product of the municipality and is protected by a De.C.O. designation. For those who want local culture, landscapes and produce to inform their travel choices, these offer a range of points of interest without needing to combine them into a fixed itinerary.
