Catanzaro lies between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts, at Italy’s narrowest point. Discoveries range from art collections and religious buildings to a large park and the coast of the Gulf of Squillace. Culture lovers encounter different eras and forms of expression: art from ancient to contemporary, architectural history from the Middle Ages to modern times, military history and rock ’n’ roll music. Local cuisine and wine are also among the things that give Catanzaro its distinctive character.

Art collections and music history

At MARCA, the collection spans art from ancient to contemporary. The museum houses around 120 paintings and sculptures, a permanent Rotella collection, and galleries for temporary exhibitions. Different artistic movements and changing displays meet here. The collection offers an introduction to various forms of art, while the Rotella collection provides a distinct focus.

The Museo del Rock is devoted to the golden age of rock ’n’ roll in the 1950s and 1960s. Its collection includes more than 10,000 original records, contemporary posters, historical magazines and rare memorabilia; the collection may continue to grow. Guided listening sessions featuring original records are also available. If you would like to plan a session, it is best to inquire in advance.

MUSMI – Museo Storico Militare Brigata Catanzaro offers another historical perspective. It presents more than two centuries of military history, from the Napoleonic era to the Second World War. Screens throughout the museum continuously show documentary material from the Archivio Luce.

Religious buildings, castle remains and theatre

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 12th century and restored several times. Its works of art include a 16th-century Madonna and Child by Antonello Gagini of Messina. The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception adds another perspective on religious architecture: it was built in 1254 in the heart of Catanzaro. The two buildings thus represent different historical periods.

The monumental San Giovanni complex was built between the 15th and 17th centuries on the remains of the old Norman castle. Its large exhibition space extends over two floors. Since 2017, visitors have been able to see the castle’s ancient dungeons within the complex; check current access arrangements before your visit. The Norman Tower is the surviving remnant of the old Norman castle and offers another distinctive landmark in the area’s history.

The Teatro Politeama also brings architecture and performing arts together. Paolo Portoghesi designed the theatre as a contemporary reinterpretation of theatrical tradition. Its programme includes opera, dance, drama and symphony concerts. Visitors interested in the performing arts will find a different experience here than in the museums and historic buildings.

Park, views and local specialities

The Parco della BiodiversitĂ  Mediterranea covers 60 hectares and combines biodiversity with cultural, scientific, sporting and recreational activities. Nature trails, educational areas and observation areas are among its facilities. The Parco Internazionale della Scultura, an open-air gallery of contemporary art, is also located in the park. Nature and public art thus offer different facets of the park.

A garden with rare plants and statues of prominent Calabrian figures surrounds Villa Trieste. The Belvedere di Catanzaro offers views of the Fiumarella Valley and the Gulf of Squillace. These places add further perspectives to a trip beyond the collections and buildings: one through gardens and statues, the other with views of the valley and gulf.

Local cuisine includes U Murzeddhu, a slowly cooked tripe dish with spicy sauce. Malvasia di Catanzaro is a local wine associated with the city.

Catanzaro Lido stretches along the Ionian coast on the Gulf of Squillace. Its seafront is lined with numerous beach establishments, hotels and eateries; individual businesses may change. The coastal landscape and promenade are also part of the destination’s character.
