Messapian tombs, churches from different periods of construction and an underground olive mill give Alezio tangible historical points of reference. At the same time, the cooking school at Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca offers a culinary perspective, with various dishes, grain milled on site and a wood-fired oven. This takes you from archaeological evidence to food preparation.
Messapian History at the Museum and Park
The Museo Civico Messapico di Alezio was founded in 1982 following archaeological excavations in the Messapian necropolis. It is housed in Palazzo Tafuri, an almost octagonal palace dating from the 18th century. The museum displays epigraphic records and gold jewellery from the 1st century BC. Written records and jewellery offer different ways to explore the Messapian past; the dating of the gold jewellery also provides a specific point of reference in time.
The Parco Archeologico Messapico turns the focus to the tombs themselves: it contains 18 Messapian tombs, laid out individually or in small groups. The park also includes a monumental tomb made of 20 slabs of local tuff. The details describe different scales: the number and arrangement of the tombs, and the material and construction of the monumental tomb.
Religious Architecture from Different Periods
The Santuario di Santa Maria della Lizza was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and is dedicated to Santa Maria della Lizza, the patron saint. Its underground cemetery contains ten cells. It was uncovered after the floor collapsed in the 1960s. The construction date and the excavation mark different historical moments: the construction date refers to the Santuario, while the later date refers to the underground cemetery.
The Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata offers a different architectural point of reference. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross; it stands on the foundations of a 12th-century building. The floor plan and foundations describe different aspects of the church: its geometric layout and its older structural base. This distinguishes it from the Santuario, whose construction period is explicitly stated.
Olive Mill, Grain and Cooking School
Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca brings together two construction periods: the 17th-century building stands above a 14th-century underground olive mill. The cooking school teaches participants how to prepare wheat bread, pucce, frise, orecchiette and minchiareddri using grain milled on site and a wood-fired oven. So the focus is not only on the names of the dishes, but also on the ingredients and preparation methods mentioned. The Masseria is open to schools and rural tourism.
Alezio DOP can also be placed geographically. Its production area covers the municipal territories of Alezio and Sannicola, as well as parts of the municipal territories of Gallipoli and Tuglie in the province of Lecce. The designation therefore refers to an area that includes different portions of municipalities, not just Alezio. Those interested in the designation of origin will find in this boundary a specific connection between the name Alezio and the designated production area.
Festa e Fiera di San Rocco
The Festa e Fiera di San Rocco includes a procession through the streets of Alezio, during which the statue of the saint is carried. From 20 October 2024 to 20 October 2035, the Festa is scheduled to take place every twelve months. Check the municipal events calendar before your trip if you would like to plan your stay around the date.
