Pasta, Lanes and Bari Vecchia

On Via Arcobasso, also known as Via Orecchiette, you can watch women from Bari making fresh pasta. This glimpse adds a tangible local experience to the city’s grand landmarks: you can see how fresh pasta is made. Anyone interested in food culture will find a distinctive way to connect with the city here, different from its museums, churches and theatres.

Bari Vecchia has a medieval historic centre enclosed by walls. The district sits on limestone rock facing the sea. Its lanes are home to around forty churches and more than one hundred votive chapels. These figures point to different scales of religious buildings and places of worship: alongside the churches, the many chapels are also part of the historic centre’s distinctive character. Bari Vecchia cannot be reduced to a single building; its medieval character is also reflected in the combination of walls, lanes and religious sites.

The Fortress and Traces of the Past

On the edge of the historic centre stands the Castello Svevo di Bari, an imposing 12th-century fortress now used as a museum. It is near the harbour area and the cathedral, making it an easy landmark between these parts of the city. Following restoration and conversion into a museum, the first floor was reopened to the public in 2017. Check the current opening conditions separately when planning your visit.

The Archaeological Museum of the Metropolitan City of Bari is housed in the medieval Benedictine monastery of Santa Scolastica, together with its adjoining 16th-century bastion. Its archaeological tour takes visitors from the 9th century through the Middle Ages to prehistoric times. The Archeologia di Bari section presents the city’s development from the Middle Ages to the Bronze Age through preserved archaeological layers. These two approaches bring different aspects of the past to life: the tour spans a period of time, while the layers show the city’s development through archaeological evidence.

The collection of the Museo Civico is also housed in a medieval fortified complex on the edge of the old town. The museum offers guided tours and educational workshops by advance reservation. The museum next to the Cattedrale di Bari makes historical, artistic and liturgical artefacts accessible to visitors. Its collections and interpretive offerings thus complement the archaeological insights with other perspectives on Bari’s history and art.

Art, the Basilica and City Life

The Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto is on the fourth floor of the historic Palazzo della Provincia di Bari. Access is via the main entrance on Lungomare Nazario Sauro or the side entrance on Via Spalato. Entrances may change during construction work or special events, so check the latest visitor information before your visit. Audio guides in Italian and English offer a critical commentary on the masterpieces on display.

The relics of Saint Nicholas are kept in the Basilica di San Nicola. Its Romanesque architecture is characteristic of Norman building style. For a digital view of the interior, the basilica’s official website offers an immersive 360-degree virtual tour. This also lets you explore the architecture as a distinct aspect of the city’s history.

The Teatro Petruzzelli is Bari’s largest theatre and, in terms of size, ranks among Italy’s major theatres. Its programme includes musicals and concerts by national and international artists; as the programme may change, it is worth checking the latest dates before your trip. The Lungomare di Bari offers a different urban highlight: the promenade runs through a large part of the city. Together, the theatre and seafront promenade show two distinct sides of Bari—theatre life and a promenade that stretches across much of the urban area.
