The Aosta Valley brings together a range of interests for visitors: Forte di Bard represents 19th-century military architecture, while short hiking routes, trails crossing the valley and alpine protected areas offer other perspectives. Roman city walls and regional food culture also give your trip its own themes. You can choose to focus on architecture, landscapes or local traditions.
Architecture and history
Forte di Bard is one of the most significant works of 19th-century military architecture. An extensive restoration project made it suitable once again for cultural and educational activities; individual exhibitions may change. In Aosta, much of the route of the Roman city wall can still be explored on foot.
Castello di Cly belongs to the so-called “primitive castle” type. Its donjon dates from the first third of the 11th century. It is partly open to visitors, but only on guided tours in summer and during events at the castle.
Nature from wetlands to high mountains
Mont Avic Nature Park was established in 1989 and is the Aosta Valley’s first regional nature park. Dozens of lakes, ponds and peat bogs define the area; their number and extent are unique in the Aosta Valley. The park borders Gran Paradiso National Park. This covers 70,000 hectares of high-alpine terrain, from the valley floor at 800 metres to the 4,061-metre summit of Gran Paradiso.
Gran Paradiso National Park has four visitor centres in the Aosta Valley: one in Cogne, two in Valsavarenche and one in RhĂŞmes-Notre-Dame. In Cogne, the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden is home to more than 1,000 plant species; flowering times can vary by season.
One way to reach Mont Avic Nature Park is via the A5: from the Verrès exit via Champdepraz, or from the Pont-Saint-Martin exit, continuing in the direction of Champorcher. Check road conditions and any access restrictions before setting off.
Hiking routes and seasonal activities
The Aosta Valley has more than 400 short hiking routes. The two Alta Via trails cross the entire valley. The Via Francigena, a historic pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome, also passes through the Aosta Valley, from the Great St Bernard Pass to Pont-Saint-Martin. This means short routes are available alongside trails that cross the region in its entirety.
The trail network covers more than 5,000 kilometres. You can search for routes by location and download GPX or KML tracks. Check local trail conditions before setting out. For white-water activities, the Dora Baltea and alpine mountain streams offer opportunities for rafting, hydrospeed, canyoning, kayaking and canoeing from April to September. Check water levels and availability with providers before making plans.
Regional specialities and festivals
MicĂłoula is a local sweet bread made with whole-wheat and rye flour, chestnuts, raisins, butter, eggs, salt and sugar. In HĂ´ne, the MicĂłoula festival is celebrated on 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, with food stalls where visitors can taste this traditional sweet treat.
Every year on 10 and 11 October, Bard hosts an event promoting Valdostan agricultural and food culture. Visitors can taste and buy products directly from local producers: cheese, cured meats, honey, baked goods, fruit and vegetables, and wine.
