The Sumbu Filosofis, about 5.3 kilometers long, stretches through the Kraton Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage Area from Panggung Krapyak in the south to Tugu Pal Putih in the north. It provides a distinctive framework for the destination’s cultural side. According to the Catur Gatra Tunggal concept, the Kraton, Alun-Alun Utara, Masjid Gedhe and Pasar Beringharjo are its four interconnected components. Taman Sari is also located within the fortress walls.

Cultural History and Craftsmanship

Taman Sari, also known as Tamansari Kraton Yogyakarta, was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwana I as a secluded retreat for the Sultan and his family. Kotagede offers a different historical focus: it was the former capital of the Mataram Islamic Kingdom and preserves a distinctive historic urban layout. Kotagede is also a center of silver craftsmanship. The tradition has been passed down through generations since the Dutch colonial period; visitors can find jewelry, miniature vehicles and accessories offered as souvenirs in the many silverware shops.

Other places showcase different aspects of craftsmanship. Pottery is a defining feature of Kasongan, and MuseumKu Gerabah exhibits ceramics and art. At Batik Tulis Giriloyo, visitors can learn to make batik themselves under the guidance of artisans. In Wukirsari, visitors can follow the making of Wayang Kulit from cattle hide, from dyeing through to the performance. Those interested in architecture and the stories of historical figures can take a tour of Kampung Kauman, which features older, distinctive buildings and stories associated with the area around Masjid Gedhe. The Makam Raja-Raja Mataram complex in the hills of Imogiri near Wukirsari is a destination for pilgrimage and spiritual tourism.

Views, Coast and Caves

The landscape offers a striking contrast to the historic sites. Watu Payung is a viewpoint above the Oya River, offering views of the distinctive hills in western Gunungkidul. The coastal scenery also varies: Pantai Krokoh combines coral hills, surf and white sand. The access road is a two-lane concrete road that can be used by motorcycles and cars. Visitors can climb a coral cliff there to watch the sunrise; camping is an option for anyone wishing to experience it. Pantai Torohudan, meanwhile, is a white-sand beach framed by two rock formations. Pantai Ngrawah, also called Ngrewang, is a quiet natural beach suited to camping and barbecuing with friends or family.

Goa Kidang Kencono is located in the Menoreh mountain range in Kulon Progo. Its cave passage is estimated to be 350 meters long and features active stalactites and stalagmites. Attractions also include an underground river that can be followed as far as Goa Kiskendo. Check locally whether underground access is possible during your visit.

Local Cuisine, Nature Knowledge and Activities

The Agradaya tour in Kalurahan Sendangrejo, Minggir, Sleman, offers insight into plants and how they are processed. Visitors learn about biofarmaka plants and see how spices are turned into ready-to-drink jamu, from garden to glass. Warung Murakabi offers a farm-to-table experience featuring local produce and spices, as well as herbal drinks and traditional snacks. At Pasar Kebon Empring in Bintaran Wetan, Piyungan, Bantul, a bamboo grove beside a clear river and a suspension bridge form the setting for traditional dishes such as Sego Wader, Pecel, Lotek, Dawet and Bakmi.

For an active outing, choose from five Jalur Monalisa tourist cycling routes: Romansa Kota Lawas, Tilik Jeron Beteng, Jelajah Harmoni Pesona Kampung, Jajah Kampung Susur Sungai and Taman Pintar Taman Budaya. Check current route conditions before setting out. In Bantul, WaterSport Deswita Opak offers banana boat rides, jet skiing and boat rides; activity availability may depend on river conditions.

Kampung Satwa Moyudan combines knowledge about animals, plants and the environment with the protection of rare native species. Children in particular can interact with some animals, feed them or keep pets there; check the rules in effect before your visit. At Gembira Loka Zoo in Kota Yogyakarta, the attractions include animal encounters, touch pools, pedal boats, water scooters and other amusement rides; individual attractions may change. Another way to experience local culture is Kupatan Jolosutro, an annual tradition in Srimulyo. If you plan to travel for it, check the event dates in advance.
