Manokwari brings together coastal landscapes, nature watching and missionary history as distinct travel themes. The city stretches around Doreri Bay and lies between low hills; to the south, the Arfak Mountains shape the landscape. Nearby are snorkeling spots, a protected area, an island with mission sites and opportunities for birdwatching. For your travel planning, these themes can be distinguished according to your interests: reefs, natural areas and history each offer their own focus.

Bay, Hills and Nature Tourism Park

Doreri Bay gives Manokwari a distinct coastal character. The low hills and the Arfak Mountains to the south are also part of the city's landscape. Gunung Meja Nature Tourism Park is located near the city center.

Gunung Meja is a protected area with tourism, hydrological and historical functions. The park also supports the livelihoods of the surrounding population. Its role therefore extends beyond tourism: water, history and local livelihoods are also part of its remit.

Snorkeling and Marine Life

At the shallow coral reef near Pasir Putih, you can snorkel and observe a variety of reef fish. Pantai Yenbeba, also known as Pantai Pasir Putih, has a snorkeling spot at the western end of the beach. Bring snorkeling gear.

Another snorkeling spot with coral reefs is at Pantai Bakaro beach. There, you can observe Striped Surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus), Convict Surgeonfish (Acanthurus triostegus) and trevally, among other species; sea conditions can vary. At the beach, the practice of attracting fish with a whistle and termite bait was introduced by Lukas Barayap. If you would like to experience this fish-attracting method, check before your visit whether it is currently being offered. The coastal highlights therefore differ: at Pasir Putih, the shallow reef and snorkeling spot take center stage, while at Bakaro, the named fish species and the fish-attracting method are additional features.

Nature Watching at Telaga Wasti

Nearby at Telaga Wasti, the focus is on birds rather than reef fish. You can observe herons, kingfishers and other fish-eating bird species, among others. Individual sightings are not guaranteed. Unlike the snorkeling spots, the focus here is on birdwatching, not life on the coral reef.

Manokwari and Pulau Mansinam: Missionary History

Manokwari is considered the place from which Christianity spread across Papua, after German missionaries CW Ottow and GG Geissler arrived there on February 5, 1855. The two names and the precise date provide a specific historical reference point.

Another point of reference lies nearby: Pulau Mansinam is considered the arrival point of the Zending missionaries who brought Christianity to Papua. Visitors can explore mission sites and the natural landscape on the island. The Mansinam Museum, also called the Pekabaran Injil Museum, was founded to commemorate the history of Christianity's arrival in Papua. The city and the island thus offer different points of reference for missionary history.
