The palaces and historic houses of Sumbawa Besar offer several perspectives on cultural history: architectural form and materials, political use, ceremonies, and the development of older settlements. Visitors who choose the city as a cultural destination can consider these themes separately rather than classifying all historic buildings in the same way. A comparison of two wooden buildings is particularly illustrative: Istana Dalam Loka and Bala Datu Ranga were built within a few years of each other, but are associated with different architectural and historical features.

Wooden buildings from the late 19th century

Istana Dalam Loka was built around 1885 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Jalaluddin Syah III. The 904-square-meter teak stilt house was renovated in 1985. Bala Datu Ranga was built in 1886, features distinctive Sumbawa architecture, and was the second-largest wooden house after Istana Dalam Loka. The construction dates are close, but the buildings differ in the features emphasized: for Dalam Loka, these are its size, teak wood, and stilt-house design; for Bala Datu Ranga, they are Sumbawa architecture and its ranking by size. These details offer different points of comparison: area indicates scale, teak wood the material, and the stilt house the architectural form.

Since 2022, the Bala Datu Ranga house has been a museum dedicated to the memory of Abdul Madjid Daeng Matutu, the last prime minister of the Sumbawa Sultanate. The building thus connects architectural history with the commemoration of a specific person from the history of the Sultanate. The Bala Datu Ranga Museum is recognized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and registered as a museum in West Nusa Tenggara Province in the National Museum Database.

Palaces between the Sultanate and the present day

A different political development is associated with Istana Bala Puti. The Sultanate of Sumbawa handed the palace over to the government; today, the Sumbawa Regency government uses it as Wisma Daerah. This use may change. The handover and its current government function belong to different periods and make the building’s political history a distinct perspective alongside its architecture.

Istana Bala Kuning, in turn, shows the connection between architecture, ceremonies, and heritage protection. Its colonial architecture is adapted to tropical conditions. In 2011, the ceremonies for the enthronement of the Sumbawa Sultan XVIII, Dewa Masmawa Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV, were held there. By Regent of Sumbawa Decree No. 1316 of 2022, Istana Bala Kuning was declared a cultural heritage site.

A longer history of the city

The history of settlement broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings. Kelurahan Bugis is one of the oldest settlements in Sumbawa Besar; its origins date to the 17th century. This local chronology therefore goes further back than the construction dates of the two wooden houses from the 1880s. For cultural context, this means shifting the scale: an individual building is considered in terms of its architectural form, material, or historical function, while Bugis is considered as the development of a settlement.
