One particularly insightful way to experience Garut is through Kampung Dukuh. In February 2024, the traditional spatial layout of Kampung Dukuh was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the province of Jawa Barat. In Kampung Dukuh Dalam, a mosque, an adat hall, a madrasah, a Bumi Alit and the Cebor Opat Puluh bathing area are among the traditional buildings and places. The focus here is therefore not solely on individual buildings: the named spatial layout is also part of the cultural story.
Village Culture, Learning and Local Traditions
Desa Wisata Saung Ciburial offers a different focus. This educational and ecotourism destination is based on local wisdom and hands-on learning about the village’s potential. Educational activities include learning about the characteristics and temperament of the iconic Domba-Garut sheep. During Ngagogo, visitors catch fish in a pond with their bare hands. Village knowledge, sheep and a hands-on pond activity offer different perspectives on Saung Ciburial. Activities and booking requirements may change; check them before making plans.
A local specialty is also part of the village’s character: Teh Kewer, also known as Teh Karuhun, is a traditional drink made from the seeds of the kewer fruit. If you would like to try it, confirm availability before your trip.
Two annual events are also of interest to culture enthusiasts. Gebyar Pesona Budaya Garut is organized by the Garut Regency government and features both traditional and modern art performances. Gelar Budaya Situ Bagendit takes place annually in the lake area; its program includes local arts, traditional ceremonies and a handicrafts bazaar. Event dates and programs can change, so it is worth checking before making plans.
Lakes, Raft Rides and Coastal Landscapes
Water also takes different forms in Garut. Situ Bagendit is a natural lake in Desa Sukamukti, Kecamatan Banyuresmi. At Situ Cangkuang, visitors can ride on a large bamboo raft. Those comparing these experiences will find two distinct ways to enjoy a lake: the natural lake of Situ Bagendit and the raft ride on Situ Cangkuang.
Along the coast, white-sand beaches and blue water define Santolo Beach in Desa Pameungpuek, Kecamatan Cikelet. Boat trips and fishing are offered at designated spots. Availability of these activities may vary depending on the season and local conditions; shoreline conditions can also change seasonally. Check what is available before your visit.
Waterfalls and Other Natural Attractions
The Sungai Ciharus visitor area in Desa Dano, Kecamatan Leles, Kabupaten Garut combines clear river water with a swimming pool, a waterfall and a campsite. These facilities were described on October 7, 2024; check which ones are currently operating before your trip.
Curug Sanghyang Taraje is an 82-meter-high waterfall in a valley near Desa Pakenjeng, Kecamatan Pamulihan. Its height makes it a distinctive natural landmark; however, access conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. Kawah Darajat, meanwhile, is a natural attraction in Kabupaten Garut known for its hot springs.
Mount Papandayan is located in Desa Sirnajaya, Kecamatan Cisurupan, Kabupaten Garut. The road infrastructure leading there has been described as adequate for visitors. As road conditions can change over time, check the latest conditions before driving.
For annual events and seasonal activities, it is advisable to check dates and conditions before making plans.
