Bandung brings together a range of cultural themes: international relations at the Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika, Indonesian independence at Monpera Jabar and Sundanese culture at Saung Angklung Udjo. There is also the colonial architectural heritage around Gedung Sate and Jalan Braga, museums dedicated to the history of West Java, and various public parks. These highlights offer different ways to plan your visit: conference history, regional remembrance, architecture, performance culture or city history.

Conference history and historic streets

The Museum Konperensi Asia Afrika is located in Gedung Merdeka in Bandung. Its permanent exhibition features three-dimensional objects and documentary photographs relating to the Tugu Meeting, the Colombo Conference, the Bogor Conference and the 1955 Asian-African Conference. The museum also serves as a center for education, documentation and reflection on the history of international relations. Those interested in conference history will find both objects and photographs relating to the meetings mentioned here.

Jalan Braga also offers a sense of the city’s history. During the Dutch colonial period, it was one of Bandung’s main streets and a fashion center. Several colonial-era buildings line the street, including Gedung Merdeka, formerly Societeit Concordia and the venue for the 1955 Asian-African Conference. Its classical buildings offer opportunities for visitor photos. Another historic street is Jalan Asia-Afrika: it is known as a destination and photo spot, and marks the zero-kilometer point of the city of Bandung.

Independence and the history of West Java

The Museum Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Jawa Barat, known as Monpera Jabar, is a historical monument and museum. It is dedicated to the fighters and people of Jawa Barat for their efforts in achieving, defending and shaping Indonesia’s independence. In Bandung, the monument presents historical documentation, artifacts from the independence struggle and accounts of important events in West Java; it has also developed into a center for history education.

Monpera Jabar offers educational visits for schools and universities, guided tours, screenings of historical documentaries, seminars, and history and culture workshops. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check the current program before your visit.

The Museum Negeri Provinsi Jawa Barat Sri Baduga preserves more than 6,000 artifacts reflecting the natural and cultural history of West Java. Its themes range from natural history and traditional culture to the region’s social history, from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum offers general visits, educational visits for schools and universities, guided tours, and permanent and temporary exhibitions. It caters to students, researchers, and local and international travelers.

Gedung Sate and Sundanese culture

Gedung Sate is a historic landmark in Bandung. Built during Dutch colonial rule, it now serves as the seat of the Jawa Barat provincial government, including the offices of the governor and deputy governor. The complex houses the Museum Gedung Sate, which presents the building’s architectural history and the history of the city of Bandung.

The garden around Gedung Sate is a public space for relaxing, gathering, national celebrations and cultural activities. The garden area is open to the public free of charge. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Saung Angklung Udjo was founded in 1966 to preserve traditional Sundanese art and culture in Jawa Barat. The “Kaulinan Urang Lembur” performance features Wayang Golek, traditional dances, an angklung orchestra and an interactive angklung session with visitors. This format therefore includes a range of performance styles as well as audience participation. Check the current program before your visit.

Parks, getting around and local cuisine

Bandung’s parks each have a different focus. At Taman Vanda, there are fountain shows during the day and at night. At Taman Sejarah Bandung, visitors can relax while learning about the city’s history and important figures from Bandung. Taman Lansia is not exclusively for older people; it is open to all visitor groups.

Alun-Alun Bandung has an area with artificial turf and a play area for children. If this play area is important to your plans, check its current condition before your visit, as its facilities may change due to renovations. For another way to get around the city, the Bandung Tour On Bus (Bandros) routes are determined on the basis of a study to ensure they pass through tourist sites or attractions.

Local cuisine can also factor into your choices: Ceu Mar is a buffet-style warung serving a variety of Sundanese dishes.
