Karst Landscapes and Early Art

The Maros Pangkep UNESCO Global Geopark encompasses the regencies of Maros and Pangkep in South Sulawesi Province. The Maros Pangkep karst area contains 572 caves. Leang Timpuseng features prehistoric hand stencils and hand paintings estimated to be about 39,900 years old. The paintings are considered rare examples of prehistoric art. Here, a distinctive karst landscape and tangible traces of early art come together. If you are interested in archaeological evidence, Leang Timpuseng provides a tangible point of reference for this subject.

River Route and Village Life

The karst mountains of Rammang-Rammang are surrounded by rivers and rice fields. Batu Forest features hollow rock cliffs that resemble caves. On the Pute River, you can travel from Dermaga II in Rammang-Rammang village towards Kampung Berua. Along the way, you will see mangroves, nipa palms and karst formations. Kampung Berua offers local culinary products such as Egg Floss, Kambu fish and Presto milkfish. This route brings together scenery, a river journey and local food, without limiting the experience to a single attraction.

History and Toraja Traditions

Fort Rotterdam now serves as a museum with historical collections about Makassar and the surrounding region. It was first built in 1545 during the reign of the tenth king of Gowa. In Tana Toraja, a mountainous region, Londa is a burial site in a cliff face. Ke'te Kesu' is a kind of living museum where you can experience the culture and traditions of the ancient Toraja firsthand. Kete Kesu is a traditional village with Tongkonan houses. In Tana Toraja, visitors can also attend the Rambu Solo ceremony. Paduppa is a traditional Bugis-Makassar dance, usually performed at welcoming ceremonies.

Boats and Experiences by the Sea

In Tanjung Bira, you can watch the construction of traditional Bugis-Makassar Pinisi boats firsthand. The tourism area has a parking lot, public toilets and a prayer room; snorkeling is also possible there. Samalona has a white-sand beach surrounded by healthy coral reefs. The reef on the northern side is particularly suitable for snorkeling. On Kodengareng Keke Island, visitors can snorkel and dive in clear waters with diverse marine life. The options described therefore differ: Samalona combines a beach and reef, while Kodengareng Keke offers both snorkeling and diving.

To Air Terjun Lacolla Waterfall

Air Terjun Lacolla is a multi-tiered waterfall: its water flows over rocky cliffs into a pool below. Visitors can hike there. You can reach the parking area by two- or four-wheeled vehicle; from there, a footpath of about 2 kilometers leads to the waterfall. This sequence of routes gives you a practical guide for planning your visit, without presuming a walking time or level of difficulty.
