Kampung Terih was originally a mangrove forest; it was later developed as a tourist destination for photography. Batam thus reflects a changing landscape. Coastal areas, bridges and cultural sites provide further, clearly distinct focal points for trip planning.
Mangroves, coast and Barelang
In the Barelang system, six bridges are connected by roads. It stretches for about 50 kilometres from the first structure to the last. This figure describes the extent of the system and helps put its scale into perspective. Barelang Bridge offers views of the open sea and several small islands; it is also a suitable spot for visitor photos. Those who want to focus on coastal views and photo opportunities will find a specific highlight here.
Pantai Nongsa lies on the northeastern coast of Pulau Batam. It offers another coastal attraction, while Kampung Terih is shaped by its former mangrove landscape and its later development as a photography destination.
Cultural sites and buildings
Pura Agung Amerta Bhuana features distinctive Balinese architecture. Travellers visit for its beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Rumah Limas Potong, by contrast, focuses on forms of housing and Malay customs: on 10 November 2011, the Batam city administration declared Rumah Limas Potong Batu Besar a cultural heritage site of Malay culture.
Rumah Limas Potong is used as an educational space. Visitors can learn about the layout of the house, domestic life, Malay wedding customs and other elements of Malay culture. This offers a practical way to explore housing and everyday life. Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya provides a different cultural connection: the temple was built by Batam’s Chinese community.
Batam Grand Mosque is considered the largest mosque on Pulau Batam. Together with the cultural sites mentioned, it offers further perspectives on the island’s buildings and cultural connections, without all the sites covering the same theme.
Getting there and activities
Batam has six ferry ports: Sekupang, Waterfront City, Batam Center, Harbour Bay, Nongsa Pura and Telaga Punggur. Before making plans, check the current connection for the port you intend to use. The tourism information lists travel times to Batam Grand Mosque of three minutes from Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal, five minutes from Hang Nadim International Airport and 15 minutes from Nagoya. These times may vary; take current conditions into account when planning.
Sea Forest Adventure combines leisure and education and is described as a family destination in Batam. Facilities include an Aqua Adventure Track, a Land Adventure Track, a Sea Adventure Track and a campsite. This brings together several named activity areas, as well as camping as a separate feature. Check the current availability of activities before visiting.
