Pulau Biak is located in Cenderawasih Bay, near the northern coast of Papua in Indonesia. Numerous atolls and coral reefs shape the island. In the Biak urban area, the tourism services sector is a hub supported by Frans Kaisiepo Airport and the Port of Biak.

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Biak, it is best to first decide what you want your trip to focus on: historic sites, the island’s natural environment, or activities on and in the water. This will help you include the destinations that interest you in your plans and choose accommodation in a suitable location.

Goa Jepang and Historic Sites

Goa Jepang/Binsari is located in Samofa, Kampung Wisata Binsari, and is both a natural attraction and a historic site from the Second World War. Goa Jepang on Pulau Biak is associated with the Battle of Biak in 1944. In Samofa District, the cave served Japanese troops as a hideout, a place to store supplies and an underground communication route. These functions give the site a tangible historical dimension.

Another historic site is the Monumen PD II Paray in Biak Kota, Anggraidi. It is a historic site from the Second World War. Together with Goa Jepang, it offers another point of reference for travellers who want to learn about Biak’s wartime history. Check the current access conditions before visiting.

Coastal Landscapes and Island Nature

Taman Burung dan Anggrek Biak in Ruar features collections of endemic orchids and birds from Papua’s natural environment. The park is a man-made tourist attraction. Water Basis in Kelurahan Waupnor is a natural attraction with a coastal landscape. The two places therefore represent different aspects of nature: collections of birds and orchids on the one hand, and a coastal landscape on the other.

Several beaches are also listed as natural attractions: Pantai Tanjung Barari is in Oridek, Mnurwar; Pantai Yensama is in Biak Timur, Opiaref. Air Terjun Wapsdori is another natural attraction, in Biak Barat, Yomdor. Separate from these is Wafsarak Waterfall, also known as Air Terjun Warsa: it is about ten metres high and surrounded by lush trees and a largely unspoilt setting.

Samber Beach, also known as Yendidori Beach, is characterised by soft white sand and clear seawater. Coral pools offer opportunities for snorkelling. When choosing between beach and waterfall destinations, consider whether you are more interested in coastal scenery, coral pools or the surroundings of a waterfall.

Water Activities and Conditions

At Wafsarak Waterfall, visitors can cliff-jump from the waterfall or from a wooden platform provided there. Swimming and playing in the water are also possible. Check local safety conditions before taking part and local water conditions before swimming.

Tanjung Saruri has reef breaks and is recommended mainly for experienced surfers. Surf conditions vary with swell, tides, wind and reef conditions. This makes it different from the activities at the waterfall and the coral pools at Samber Beach: surfing, with a clearly stated experience level, is the main focus here.

Food Culture and Trip Planning

On 19 October 2025, Munara Fan Nanggi, also known as Munara Fun Nanggi, was part of Festival Budaya Biak. This customary communal celebration in Biak included various foods made from the natural resources of Pulau Biak. It brings together food culture, the communal nature of the festival and the island’s resources.

For Tanjung Saruri, the suggested route is to fly to Biak and then continue overland to the coast. Check specific routes and available transport options before travelling, as they may change.
