An early boat trip to watch dolphins, a national park with a long history as a protected area, and places with archaeological traces reveal different sides of Lampung. The province lies at the southern end of the island of Sumatra and encompasses coastal areas, small islands, tropical forests, mountains and nature reserves.
Nature between the coast and protected areas
Way Kambas National Park lies in Lampung Timur and Lampung Tengah and has served as a nature reserve since 1937. Visitors can observe and ride tame elephants there. If you are planning a visit to the park for these activities, check current availability before your trip.
Another natural highlight is the rocky islands of Pulau Wayang, which rise out of the sea. The island is in Kabupaten Pesawaran, in Lampung Province, within the Teluk Lampung area. Pulau Wayang can only be reached by boat or excursion vessel; sea conditions can affect the journey. Take this access into account when planning, and check conditions before departure.
Pantai Mutun offers a different coastal setting: the beach has soft white sand and clear seawater. Two distinct landscapes sit side by side—the rocky islands rising from the sea at Pulau Wayang and the sandy beach at Pantai Mutun. At Teluk Kiluan, visitors head out by boat early in the morning to watch wild dolphins leap out of the clear blue sea.
Cultural history and crafts
The Piil Pesenggiri philosophy of Lampung’s local population emphasizes dignity, courtesy and kinship. It offers a cultural focus alongside the province’s landscapes and excursions. Pugung Raharjo Archaeological Park contains remains from the prehistoric, Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic periods. Traces from several historical periods are therefore at the heart of the site.
Lampung Museum is dedicated to preserving the province’s history, culture and art. Kain Tapis and traditional woven fabrics embroidered with gold thread, which continue to be made in Lampung, offer a different perspective across time. While the archaeological remains illustrate different periods, ongoing textile production points to a craft that is still practiced today.
Regional cuisine
The local cuisine also offers specific starting points for planning your trip. Tempoyak is an ingredient typical of Lampung, made from fermented durian pulp and salt. Seruit, by contrast, is a shared dish: it combines fish with sambal, tempoyak and side dishes such as raw vegetables and rice. Tempoyak thus appears both as an ingredient in its own right and as part of a dish that brings several components together. If regional food culture is important to you, this distinction highlights a specific aspect of Lampung.
Getting there and planning your route
Bakauheni Port is an important connection between Java and Sumatra; it is linked to Merak Port in Banten. Bandar Lampung has an operational rail connection to Palembang in South Sumatra. Rajabasa Bus Terminal is an important public transport hub, with long-distance buses from Jakarta and other cities on Java. These details refer to different transport hubs and connections, so plan according to your respective starting point and destination.
The regular ferry journey from a beach to Pahawang Island is listed as taking about 90 minutes. Weather and operating conditions can affect travel time, so treat this as an estimate when planning. Pulau Wayang can only be reached by boat or excursion vessel, and sea conditions can also affect the journey there. The type of access and approximate travel time are therefore important differences to consider when including island excursions in your trip.
