Probolinggo offers a range of local highlights: an early weekly market, religious and historical heritage, mangrove landscapes and leisure activities. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you want to focus on culture, nature or a particular activity. The places and activities offer different points of reference.
Weekly Market and Religious Heritage
Pasar Tugu takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 to 9 a.m. on the four streets around Alun-Alun: Jl. Ahmad Yani, Jl. KH. Agus Salim, Jl. Trunojoyo and Jl. KH Mansur. Among other things, food and entertainment for children are available. If you plan to visit the market, check the weekly schedule again before your trip.
The heritage-listed Klenteng Tri Dharma Sumber Naga has existed since 1865 and is more than 150 years old. It serves as a place of worship for three religions: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Visiting this temple therefore offers insight into religious heritage. The museum at Jl. dr. Moh Saleh No. 1 was formerly the private home of Dr. Mohamad Saleh, considered Probolinggo’s first local doctor. It offers a different historical perspective: a former residence associated with a prominent figure in the city.
Traditions and Historical Traces
Kerapan Sapi Brujul is a cattle race held after the harvest in water-rich agricultural areas. The tradition from Kota Probolinggo was designated intangible cultural heritage by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture on October 18, 2019. This describes its cultural significance without specifying a fixed event date.
Sumber Ardi is a spring in Kelurahan Wonoasih. The rectangular pool covers an area of about 150 square metres and is considered, according to local tradition, to be a remnant of the Dutch colonial period. The approximate area and the traditional account of its origins give this place a different historical dimension from the documented founding of the temple: here, the attribution remains part of the local narrative.
Mangroves, Beach and Water
Bee Jay Bakau Resort (BJBR) is a five-hectare mangrove ecotourism area in Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai Mayangan. Pantai Permata features a different combination of landscape elements: beach, Cemara Udang trees, mangrove forest and boats. If you are comparing nature-focused destinations, BJBR centres on mangrove ecotourism, while Pantai Permata combines beach and coastal scenery.
There are also different activities to enjoy on the water. On the western side of Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai Mayangan, the waters are used for the swimming or immersion activity known as “wisata kum kkum.” In Sumber Sentong, visitors can dip their feet into a pool with red tilapia and feel the fish nibble during a fish-foot therapy session. Kampung Nila, meanwhile, offers fishing ponds stocked with nila, mujair and milkfish, as well as parking and suitable access. These three activities offer different ways to experience the water: immersion, fish-foot therapy or fishing.
Leisure Activities with Different Focuses
Taman Wisata Studi Lingkungan (TWSL) offers family recreation with animals and various plant species. For families looking to combine nature with leisure, it differs from the swimming pool in the GOR Mastrip complex, which is better suited to swimming training and competitions and has Olympic-standard dimensions.
A park on Jalan Semeru in Kelurahan Triwung Kidul, Kecamatan Kademangan, can be used for family recreation, playing, relaxing, sports, artistic activities and use of a reading garden. Among the places described, you can therefore find options for both exercise and relaxation or cultural activities. Which ones suit your stay depends on whether you would like to include animals and plants, sports, fishing or local culture.
