Jakarta shows many different sides: museums and cultural sites offer a journey through history and art, while a marine protected area and an extensive island world in Jakarta Bay are part of the destination’s character. Historic sites, performance venues, and leisure destinations also give the city its own distinctive character.
History and Culture in Collections
The Museum Bahari focuses on Indonesia’s maritime history and fisheries, with collections spanning the country from Sabang to Merauke. The Museum Sejarah Jakarta traces Jakarta’s history from prehistoric times through the heyday of the Sunda Kelapa port and the colonial period to independence. Its collection includes 23,500 historical objects and reproductions. The National Museum of Indonesia displays more than 140,000 prehistoric, archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, and ceramic objects.
Other museums focus on particular areas of art and culture. The Museum Tekstil houses batik fabrics, woven fabrics, textile tools, mixed collections, and up to 1,000 other textiles. The Museum Wayang displays Indonesian and foreign wayang figures and puppets, gamelan ensembles, and wayang paintings. The Museum Taman Prasasti is a cultural heritage museum from the Dutch colonial period; its distinctive features include old tomb inscriptions, miniature tombs from 27 Indonesian provinces, and antique hearses.
Historic Sites and Betawi Culture
Kota Tua Jakarta, also known as Batavia, extends across the administrative areas of West and North Jakarta. The historic district includes colonial forts, canals, government buildings, and office buildings. The National Monument, or Monas for short, symbolizes the Indonesian people’s struggle for independence.
Kampung Setu Babakan offers a different cultural perspective: the Betawi cultural village is described as Jakarta’s last stronghold of Betawi culture. Setu Babakan also includes a 32-hectare artificial lake fed by the Ciliwung River. Here, cultural heritage and a striking landscape sit side by side.
Art, Performance, and Leisure
Taman Ismail Marzuki is an arts and cultural center for theater, music, dance, and visual arts. Its facilities include large and small theaters, galleries, a planetarium, a library, and a literary documentation center. Festivals, exhibitions, discussions, and performances at national and international levels are held there regularly. Gedung Kesenian Jakarta is also still actively used for theater, music, art exhibitions, and classical music concerts.
Ancol combines relaxation and entertainment: the area was developed as an integrated leisure and entertainment destination, with beaches and sports facilities, as well as a modern landmark for marine tourism. At Pasar Seni Ancol, artists have space to create and sell their own work. Dunia Fantasi, also known as Dufan, opened in 1985 and offers rides of a modern international standard. Those interested in everyday sports can see another side of the city in the area outside the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, which Jakarta residents use for exercise.
Island Nature in Jakarta Bay
Kepulauan Seribu National Park is a national marine protected area and a tourist island destination in Jakarta Bay. Kepulauan Seribu includes more than 110 islands, and its marine and island landscape attracts visitors. Mangrove cultivation and protection are central to Pulau Tidung Kecil. Jembatan Cinta bridge connects Pulau Tidung Besar and Pulau Tidung Kecil.
The individual islands also have different highlights. Pulau Bidadari is home to Benteng Martello, a fort from the Dutch colonial period. Activities offered there include snorkeling, fishing, canoeing, and banana boat rides; the availability of individual activities may change. Pulau Onrust has archaeological remains and historic buildings from the Dutch colonial period. The Museum Taman Arkeologi Onrust also houses a miniature model of the island. On Pulau Putri, visitors can observe marine life in an underwater tunnel aquarium without snorkeling.
