Malang reveals its history in many different ways: through educational artifacts in museums, the traditions of Kampung Budaya Polowijen and historic buildings throughout the city. There are also ceramic crafts, painted houses and public green spaces. This lets you discover the city’s culture through a range of themes, rather than reducing it to a single attraction.

Cultural History and Crafts

The Museum Pendidikan Kota Malang presents the history of education in Kota Malang from the past to the present. Historic educational artifacts include traditional clothing, old typewriters, school desks and traditional games. The collection may change. These objects offer a tangible insight into the history of learning and everyday school life.

At Kampung Budaya Polowijen, local cultural heritage is preserved through Topeng dance, mask-making, batik and historic sites. Visitors can learn about Topeng Malangan, batik and Topeng dance. Arrange your visit in person in advance. Kelenteng Eng An Kiong offers a different religious perspective: the heritage-listed building is a Tridharma temple used for Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist worship.

The city’s history is also reflected in its public buildings. Malang City Hall was built around 1927 during the Dutch colonial period. Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan, a cultural heritage destination with well-preserved old houses, lies in the center of Kota Malang. Kajoetangan is also considered a culinary destination; this does not specify particular dishes or offerings.

Ceramics connect two more places to explore, each with its own distinct offerings. A 2024 tourism listing notes daily ceramic production and daily visitor packages at Kampung Keramik Dinoyo. For Kampung Gerabah Penanggungan, it lists daily pottery production and a workshop on designing stoneware ceramics on the fourth Sunday of each month. Check dates and arrangements locally before visiting.

Neighborhoods, Green Spaces and Experiences

Kampung Warna Warni Jodipan stands out for its brightly painted houses; individual murals may change. Glintung Water Street offers educational activities on urban farming and processing catfish. A 2024 tourism listing notes workshops on rivers, the environment, vegetable crops, recycling and bamboo plants at Kampung Bamboo Mewek Park.

For a green break, Taman Singha Merjosari has the feel of a city park, with gazebos, walking paths and a jogging track. Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang has been transformed into a modern, pedestrian-friendly city park while retaining its historic function. The two parks have different features: one emphasizes gazebos and paths, while the other combines a public park with a historic purpose.

The streets and districts also shape the impression of Kota Malang. Idjen Boulevard is a landmark, with a divided road designed as a boulevard and a planted median. Kawasan Ijen lies in the city center and extends approximately from Jalan Ijen to the cathedral. This helps distinguish two different aspects of the cityscape: a striking road layout and a broader district.

There are also different options for recreational activities. Taman Trunojoyo provides an integrated space where children can play, learn and interact. A 2024 tourism listing includes a swimming pool at Taman Rekreasi Kota Malang. It describes Trans Studio Mini Malang as an indoor theme park with 148 rides for adults and children; the selection may change. Fantasy Land is also listed, with a spring-fed swimming pool and temple replicas.

In the area around Gajayana Stadium, a 2024 tourism listing names WBT Semeru as a shopping destination offering local dishes and modern snacks. Vendors and products may change. Together with Kajoetangan’s culinary character, this rounds out a picture of Malang that includes places to eat and shop as well as culture and urban history.
