Wisata Alam Banyuanyar is a natural bathing area in Dusun Curah Leduk, Kecamatan Kalibaru. It was developed around a natural river with several waterfall tiers and pools. For travelers interested in a waterside landscape, the bathing area in Kecamatan Kalibaru is a specific point of interest. Check current access options before visiting.

Water and Coffee in Kecamatan Kalibaru

Coffee is also among the experiences described in this kecamatan. In Desa Kalibaru Kulon, visitors could tour a coffee plantation, follow the processing of Robusta coffee and try “kopi lanang.” A 2019 report described this activity as still being in development at the time. If you plan a visit, check in advance whether it is offered today.

The two themes have different focuses: Banyuanyar is about the river, waterfall tiers and pools; coffee is about processing and tasting.

Culture in the Wider Banyuwangi Destination

The wider Banyuwangi destination offers a distinct cultural setting. The Gandrung Sewu Festival has been held in Banyuwangi Regency since 2012 and has been part of the Kharisma Event Nusantara program since 2023. These dates reflect the festival’s development and its later inclusion in the program; check event dates for a specific edition.

In Desa Wisata Adat Osing Kemiren, the Osing community’s customs, language and traditional arts are preserved. At harvest time, women perform Gedhogan there: they strike mortars and pestles, accompanied by angklung and drums. Since performances are tied to the harvest, it is advisable to ask locally. In Kemiren, visitors can also learn about traditional coffee preparation. The beans are pounded, roasted and sifted before the coffee is served; traditionally, they are roasted in a pan over a clay stove. Check with local hosts to find out whether this experience is available.

Another cultural point of interest in Banyuwangi is Pura Giri Selokah, a Hindu temple in Alas Purwo National Park. The temple draws many pilgrims, especially during Pagerwesi, a sacred Hindu ritual.

Landscapes and Activities in Banyuwangi

Alas Purwo National Park encompasses mangroves, savannas, tropical lowland monsoon forests and coral-fringed beaches. Wildlife is also a defining feature of the park: every year, thousands of migratory birds visit its forests, and sea turtles come to its remote beaches to lay their eggs. Along with its variety of landscapes, the area is clearly associated with wildlife watching and conservation.

At Ijen in the wider Banyuwangi destination, two details refer to different sections of the route: a three-kilometer trail leads from Paltuding Post to the edge of the Ijen caldera. Walking along the crater rim itself takes about one to one and a half hours. The time estimate therefore refers to the walk along the rim, not the route from the post to the rim. Check local access rules before hiking.

The coastal destinations in Banyuwangi also offer different experiences. Teluk Hijau, also known as Green Bay, is in Taman Nasional Meru Betiri near Sarongan; clear, greenish seawater, rocky cliffs and tropical forest define the bay. A small hill of red sand lies close to the shoreline at Pantai Pulau Merah. Pantai Plengkung, known as G-Land, is in Alas Purwo National Park in Kecamatan Tegaldlimo and is known for its large waves, which make for challenging surfing; sea conditions vary. Bangsring Underwater in Desa Bangsring, Kecamatan Wongsorejo, is a snorkeling destination and coral reef conservation center. These examples differ significantly in landscape and activity; when choosing, consider whether you are more interested in coastal scenery, surfing or snorkeling.
