Explore Genteng through a range of themes: the history of Dam Setail, the leisure areas of RTH Maron and the Endog-Endogan tradition in Desa Kembiritan. These facets offer different starting points for planning your trip—from a historic site and public facilities to a community custom.
Dam Setail and RTH Maron
Dam Setail in Kecamatan Genteng was built in 1925. A 2017 report described the dam, painted mostly white and blue, as a place where local residents relaxed every afternoon. The structure is therefore associated both with a specific year and with a use in the community’s daily life as described at the time.
The public park RTH Maron in Kecamatan Genteng offers a different kind of leisure. Its facilities include a jogging path, a skate park, an area with reflexology stones and an amphitheater. These varied features give the park a more diverse character than the historically significant Dam Setail: here, several kinds of spaces for exercise and relaxation sit side by side.
Endog-Endogan in Kembiritan
Endog-Endogan is celebrated in Desa Kembiritan during Maulid Nabi Muhammad. The tradition has been observed there for almost three decades and is intended to encourage interaction and strengthen community bonds. Endog-Endogan is therefore not just a festive custom, but also an opportunity to experience a social aspect of local cultural life.
The 2024 Endog-Endogan procession followed a 1.5-kilometer route from Masjid Baiturrahman to Kantor Desa Kembiritan.
Water-based activities are also among the options described in the area. A 2022 article reported canoeing, tubing and fishing at Sasak Gantung Terpadu. If you plan your visit around one of these activities, check availability in advance.
Banyuwangi as a wider travel destination
The wider destination of Banyuwangi offers additional cultural and natural attractions. The Gandrung Sewu Festival has been held in Banyuwangi Regency since 2012 and has been part of the Kharisma Event Nusantara program since 2023. If you are planning a trip for a future edition, check the specific event dates.
In Desa Wisata Adat Osing Kemiren, the customs, language and traditional arts of the Osing community are preserved. Visitors can also learn about traditional coffee preparation there: the beans are pounded, roasted and sifted, and the coffee is then served. Traditionally, the beans are roasted in a pan over a clay stove. Since the opportunity to take part depends on availability with local hosts, it is advisable to ask in advance. Another tradition in Kemiren is Gedhogan: during the harvest season, women pound rice using mortars and pestles, accompanied by angklung and drums. Confirm the performance schedule locally.
For nature lovers, Alas Purwo National Park in the wider Banyuwangi destination offers a different focus. Its landscape includes mangroves, savannas, tropical lowland monsoon forests and coral-fringed beaches. Thousands of migratory birds visit the park’s forests every year; sea turtles come to its remote beaches to lay their eggs.
The two Ijen details can also be distinguished for planning: a three-kilometer route leads from Paltuding Post to the rim of the Ijen Caldera. This is separate from the walk along the crater rim, which is said to take about one to one and a half hours. Local access rules may change, so check them before your visit.
