Cilacap brings coastal experiences, nature and culture together: relatively small waves shape the scene at Pantai Teluk Penyu, while mangroves, historical collections and regional specialties reveal other sides of the destination. Exploring Cilacap lets you choose between beach landscapes, insights into local history and green getaways, each offering a different focus.
Beaches and a Boat Trip to Nusakambangan
Pantai Teluk Penyu is in Kelurahan Cilacap, Kecamatan Cilacap Selatan. Its relatively small waves make the beach suitable for swimming. Excursion boats take visitors from there to Nusakambangan Island; Pantai Pasir Putih is about a 15-minute boat ride away. White sand, coral formations and dense green forest define this beach’s landscape. At Teluk Penyu, swimming and taking a boat trip to a different coastal landscape are two distinct ways to enjoy the area.
Other beaches have their own character, too. Pantai Ketapang Indah has a wide, gently sloping shoreline that is suitable for playing in the sand and wading. Pantai Karang Pakis, in Desa Karangpakis in Kecamatan Nusawungu, also has a wide, gently sloping beach. Cliffs and tall cypress trees shape the surroundings of Pantai Sodong, also known as Pantai Selok; the beach lies beyond the Srandil Mountains in Desa Karang Benda, Kecamatan Adipala. The different landscapes help you tailor your coastal visit to what you want to see or do at the beach.
Mangroves, Forest and Thermal Waters
Hutan Payau offers a contrast to the open coastline: mangroves grow there, and the forest is home to mudskippers, fiddler crabs, pistol shrimp and various bird species. The area is in Desa Tritih Kulon, Kecamatan Cilacap Utara, about four kilometers from the center of Cilacap. The access road is paved, close to a main road and signposted. This makes it possible to experience a mangrove area independently of a beach visit.
Kemit Forest, by contrast, is known for its pine trees and views over the landscape of Kecamatan Sidareja: the forest is on higher ground, offering views of Sidareja from above. Activities there include an aerial bicycle, paragliding, a skybridge and a tree house; other activities are available for children and adults. Waduk Kubangkangkung has numerous play areas for children and several selfie photo spots. For a different nature experience, Pemandian Air Panas Cipari has three pools—two large and one small—as well as ten sauna cabins with bathtubs. Visitors use the sulfur-rich water for health therapies.
Fortress, Museum and Living Culture
Benteng Pendem has a long construction history: the complex was built in several phases between 1861 and 1879, across an area of 6.5 hectares. It came under new management in 1986, which also marked the beginning of its history as a tourist attraction. The Soesilo Soedarman Museum in Desa Gentasari preserves the personal collection of General Soesilo Soedarman. On display are military equipment, a maritime patrol aircraft, the family gamelan and shadow puppets dating from around the 18th century.
Performing arts and crafts also offer insights into regional culture. The Tari Jalungmas dance combines movements in the Jaipong style with traditional Gending in the Banyumas style, accompanied by Banyumas Calung gamelan. Batik Hendy offers designs including Parang Wijaya Kusuma, Kawung Cilacap, Pesisir Teluk Penyu, Daun Waru and Sido Cilacap. In Desa Bajing, Kecamatan Kroya, Batik Subama produces fabrics with local designs, including mangroves, marine life and Nusakambangan Island. These cultural impressions range from music and dance to patterns inspired by the landscape and local places.
Local Cuisine and Travel Impressions
One of Cilacap’s signature dishes is Brekecek Pathak Jahan, a spicy dish made with Jahan fish. Gembus is made from cassava and shaped like a doughnut. At Pantai Teluk Penyu, shell souvenirs, a fish market and a variety of seafood dishes add to the coastal experience. Seafood is also available at Pantai Jetis; at the TPI Congot fish auction center, visitors can also buy the day’s catch directly. These culinary experiences can be discovered as a distinct part of the trip, alongside beaches, nature and culture.
