At the heart of Bogor lies Kebun Raya Bogor, which borders the Istana Bogor Presidential Palace complex. The botanical garden combines an extensive collection with a long history of research. Other aspects of Bogor range from natural history and regional history to the local specialty asinan. This destination therefore has something to offer visitors with a variety of interests.

Kebun Raya Bogor: Botany and research

Kebun Raya Bogor covers 87 hectares and has a collection of 15,000 species of trees and plants. It was established in 1817 by the government of the Dutch East Indies. The garden continued to develop under the direction of botanists Johannes Elias Teijsmann, Rudolph Herman Christiaan Carel Scheffer and Melchior Treub. Since its founding, it has served as an important research center for agriculture and horticulture; it is also the oldest botanical garden in Southeast Asia. Visitors can walk along paved paths in the garden. Area and collection figures may change over time.

Bogor Botanical Garden also includes Taman Meksiko. Its collection comprises more than 100 plant species from arid climates, including agaves, yuccas, cacti and other succulents. This area thus offers a distinctive botanical focus within the garden. For comparison, Istana Kepresidenan Bogor covers approximately 28.86 hectares, while Kebun Raya Bogor covers 87 hectares.

Museums and regional history

The Zoology Museum was founded in 1894. Across 122 displays, it presents 954 animal species from Indonesia; these collection figures may change. The museum also has the world's largest collection of mammal skeletons. This includes a blue whale, which is now considered a museum landmark. The natural history collections and the museum's history thus form a distinct focus within Bogor.

The PETA Museum and Monument has 769 exhibits as well as dioramas about the founding of PETA and its role in the struggle for independence. Prasasti Batutulis is regarded as a sign of the Pajajaran Kingdom's prosperity and as an important landmark for Kota Bogor and Jawa Barat. These two examples explore different historical topics: the dioramas cover the founding and role of PETA, while Prasasti Batutulis is associated with the history of the Pajajaran Kingdom.

Landscape, climate and local cuisine

Bogor has a cooler climate than the Jakarta metropolitan area. Situ Gede in Kota Bogor covers 6 hectares and is part of efforts to preserve the landscape and control flooding. Asinan is a local Bogor dish made from fruit and vegetables, available from street vendors and in souvenir shops. When looking for hotels in Bogor, you might consider whether you want to focus your trip on botany, natural history and regional history, or local cuisine.
