As you explore Bengkulu, you’ll encounter a blend of living traditions, coastal scenery and distinctive nature. The Tabut Festival, the long sandy coastline of Pantai Panjang and the rare plants found around the province offer very different ways to discover the region. You can shape your explorations around your interests, from tradition and history to landscapes by the water or in protected forest areas.
Tradition, Music and History
The Tabut Festival is a cultural tradition passed down through generations and a symbol of the historical, religious and cultural values of the people of Bengkulu. It features distinctive Dhol music, a sacred Tabut procession and various traditional artistic performances. Together, these elements bring music, ritual and performing arts into view, without requiring you to visit on a particular date.
The Dol is also part of Bengkulu’s musical character. This powerful-sounding percussion instrument is often played at traditional events, including the Tabot Festival. For those interested in cultural expression, it offers another connection between music and tradition alongside the festival.
In Kota Bengkulu, Kampung China preserves traces of the cultural blending of Chinese and local traditions. The historic quarter is distinguished by old buildings with characteristic Chinese architecture. Visitors can sample Chinese specialties and explore the historic buildings—a combination of culinary impressions and built heritage.
The UPTD Museum Negeri Bengkulu offers further insights into history. It presents local history and culture through objects that span the period from prehistoric times to the modern era. Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno also has a specific historical connection: from 1938 to 1942, it was the residence of Ir. Soekarno, the first president of the Republic of Indonesia, during his exile in Bengkulu.
Coast, Lake and Island Nature
Pantai Panjang has a coastline about 7 kilometers long, with white sand and a gently sloping profile. The coast is often used for leisurely walks and for running in the morning or evening. At certain spots, surfing is also possible when the waves are generally calm, both for local surfers and visitors. These different activities are therefore not equally suited to every stretch of the coast.
Danau Dendam Tak Sudah in Kota Bengkulu offers a different kind of scenery. The lake covers about 559 hectares and is surrounded by green landscapes. It is a habitat for rare plant and animal species, including the endangered pencil orchid. The lake’s name also carries a local story: it comes from a folk tale about two lovers whose relationship ended unhappily.
Pulau Tikus offers a marine setting. The island is entirely surrounded by rocky coral reefs that support marine ecosystems; it is also a place for snorkeling and diving. Hawksbill turtles and green turtles nest along its white sand coast. The reefs, coastline and wildlife are different aspects of the same natural environment.
Rare Blooms and the Right Timing
Rafflesia Bengkuluensis is a giant corpse flower found only in Bengkulu. If you want to see it, choose your timing carefully, as it blooms only briefly. Visitors can also see Rafflesia arnoldii in protected forest areas of Bengkulu Province when the rare flower is in bloom.
Getting There
Pantai Panjang is about 3 to 4 kilometers from the center of Kota Bengkulu and can be reached by private or public transport. The drive from Fatmawati Soekarno Airport to the coast takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Distances and travel times are approximate and may be affected by routes and traffic conditions.
Baai Harbor is also useful when planning your arrival: ships on domestic routes from Jakarta, Padang and Medan call there. If you plan to travel via the harbor, check the latest schedule in advance. This lets you plan your trip around what interests you most in Bengkulu—culture and history, the coast or rare nature.
