Tasikardi is a relic of the Sultanate of Banten, while Fort Speelwijk recalls the history of Banten society as well as Western imperialism and colonialism. These two landmarks offer different perspectives on the province: the heritage of the Sultanate and its colonial history. Cultural traditions, nature and coastlines also shape Banten’s character.
The History of the Sultanate and Banten Lama
In the Banten Lama area, the Museum Situs Kepurbakalaan Banten Lama preserves historical artifacts from the surrounding region. Banten Lama was a bustling administrative center and port of the Sultanate of Banten from the 16th century onward. Its collection is therefore connected to the history of a place that served as an important administrative center and port for a long time.
The collection comprises more than approximately 1,000 artifacts dating from prehistoric times to the colonial period. The items are preserved and displayed both indoors and outdoors. Fort Speelwijk adds to these historical landmarks as a reminder of Banten society and of Western imperialism and colonialism in Banten. Masjid Agung Banten, in the Kesultanan Banten area of Kota Serang, is one of Indonesia’s oldest mosques and served as a center for the spread of Islam in Banten. Keraton Kaibon is part of the managed historical and tourist area of Banten Lama.
Tasikardi in Desa Margasana is also a relic of the Sultanate of Banten. The lake once served as a water source for the palace’s residents. Alongside artifacts, religious landmarks and historic sites, it also offers a glimpse into the area’s former water supply.
Baduy Culture and Trails Through Hilly Terrain
The Baduy are a Sundanese sub-ethnic group who live in the Kendeng Mountains. They preserve their inherited heritage through Pikukuh, a traditional code of rules. In the Baduy area of Kabupaten Lebak, local knowledge exists alongside a traditional culture that has largely remained protected from modern influences. These cultural connections give the area a distinctive character among Banten’s many attractions.
The route from Ciboleger to the Baduy inner settlements is traveled on foot through hilly terrain. If you include this route in your travel plans, the nature of the path is also a practical consideration: it is a walking route across hilly terrain.
National Park, Beaches and Islands
Ujung Kulon National Park encompasses tropical rainforest, natural beaches and small islands. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. This combination of landscapes makes the park a distinctive nature destination in Banten.
Tanjung Lesung is an integrated beach, recreation and resort area in Pandeglang, facing Gunung Anak Krakatau. You can snorkel and dive around the coral reefs. Sea conditions and access may change, so check both before your visit.
Pulau Umang is a small island in Banten Province with a white-sand beach and crystal-clear seawater. From Pantai Sumur in Pandeglang, the island can be reached by speedboat in about five minutes; crossing times may vary depending on sea conditions. The island and its short but conditions-dependent boat crossing are both worth considering when planning your trip.
Dishes from Banten
Sate Bandeng is a Banten specialty made with boneless milkfish. The fish is seasoned, stuffed back into its skin and grilled over charcoal. This preparation gives the dish a distinct place in the regional cuisine, with both the fish and its particular method of preparation taking center stage.
Rabeg is a dish made with goat meat or offal and is popular in Banten, especially in Kota Serang and Cilegon. Together, these two specialties showcase different culinary ingredients: milkfish for Sate Bandeng, and goat meat or offal for Rabeg.
Trip Ideas and Hotel Search
When searching for hotels in Banten, first decide which discoveries you want to shape your trip: the history of the Sultanate, Baduy culture, or coastal and marine landscapes. Choosing a focus gives your plans direction and helps you tailor your search to your interests.
