Landscape, Craft and Ceremony in Tenganan

A preserved community forest, expansive rice fields and a clear river shape the landscape of Tenganan Pegringsingan. The rice fields line the river, and the community forest completes the landscape. Gringsing weaving and Perang Pandan also shape the cultural side of the village.

Gringsing weaving in Tenganan Pegringsingan uses the double ikat technique and natural dyes. Visitors can watch the natural dyeing and weaving of Gringsing fabrics and try basic steps alongside local craftspeople. Watching and trying it out therefore involve the same craft, but offer different experiences.

Perang Pandan, also called Mekare-kare, is a distinctive traditional ceremony found only in Tenganan Pegringsingan. Unlike weaving, its focus is not textile work but a ceremony with its own name and local significance.

The Tour Desa includes lunch made with locally sourced ingredients. The menu and price may vary. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide whether to focus on Tenganan itself or the wider destination of Karangasem.

More to explore in the wider destination of Karangasem

At Tulamben Beach lies the 120-metre-long wreck of the USAT Liberty, dating from the Second World War. It is used for diving and snorkelling and provides a habitat for marine life. Tulamben Beach is also a diving and snorkelling area with an impressive underwater landscape.

Taman Wisata Tirta Gangga was built in 1948 by the ruler of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem Agung. The Samsara Living Museum in Jungutan, Bebandem, Kabupaten Karangasem, offers a different cultural focus. It presents the life cycle of Balinese people through rituals and ritual objects. At least 14 Hindu ceremonies are presented there through photographs with explanations and ritual objects. Balinese food is also sold to tourists at the museum.

The Salak agrotourism attraction Agrowisata Abian Salak is located in Sibetan, Bebandem. It is managed by local residents organised in the tourism-conscious group Dukuh Lestari. Fifteen varieties of salak grow in Sibetan village, including Salak Nenas and Salak Gula Pasir. To help orient yourself around the region, note the locations: the wreck lies off Tulamben Beach in Kubu, Kabupaten Karangasem; Agrowisata Abian Salak is on Jalan Raya Duda Timur in Sibetan, Bebandem, also within the wider destination of Karangasem.

At Jemeluk Bay, visitors can snorkel directly from the beach. Together with the diving and snorkelling areas near Tulamben, this offers another maritime perspective on Karangasem, while Tenganan’s own distinctive features are its landscape, Gringsing weaving and Perang Pandan.
