Karangasem brings together a variety of cultural and natural themes. In Amlapura, a 19th-century royal palace and a public Hindu temple take center stage. Across the wider Karangasem destination, historic sites, a museum, salak cultivation and underwater locations add to the picture.
Amlapura: Palace History and Temples
Puri Agung Karangasem is located in the center of Amlapura. It was built in the 19th century by Anak Agung Gede Jelantik, the first king of Karangasem. Its architecture combines Balinese, Chinese and European styles. These three influences shape the palace together and give it a distinctive cultural and historical character.
Also located in the center of Amlapura is Pura Jagatnatha, a public Hindu temple. Its location is precisely defined: at the intersection of Jalan Ngurah Rai and Jalan Patih Jelantik in Lingkungan Tampuagan. The palace and temple thus offer different perspectives on Amlapura: the palace is connected with the history of a king, while the temple is identified as a Hindu place of worship.
The 2026 edition of the Karangasem Festival celebrated the anniversary of the city of Amlapura. Its program combined arts events and traditional performances with exhibitions by small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as activities by community groups. This edition therefore covered everything from art and performances to local businesses and community activities.
Other Facets of the Wider Karangasem Destination
Taman Wisata Tirta Gangga was built in 1948 by the ruler of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem Agung. The year and the builder give the site a clear historical connection within the destination.
The Samsara Living Museum in Jungutan, Bebandem, Kabupaten Karangasem, offers a different cultural focus. It presents the life cycle of the Balinese people through rituals and ritual objects. At least 14 Hindu ceremonies are presented there through photographs, explanations and ritual objects. The exhibition thus combines a comprehensive view of the life cycle with specific ceremonies. Balinese food is also sold to tourists at the museum.
The salak agrotourism attraction Agrowisata Abian Salak is located in Sibetan, Bebandem. It is managed by local residents organized in the tourism-conscious group Dukuh Lestari. Fifteen varieties of salak grow in Sibetan village, including Salak Nenas and Salak Gula Pasir. The variety of cultivars and community management give this focus an agricultural dimension that differs from palace history and the museum’s subject matter.
Underwater experiences are also among the region’s attractions. Tulamben Beach is a diving and snorkeling area with an impressive underwater landscape. The 120-meter-long wreck of the USAT Liberty, from World War II, lies there. It is used for diving and snorkeling and provides a habitat for marine life. Visitors can also snorkel directly from the beach at Jemeluk Bay. Different aspects are highlighted: in Tulamben, the wreck and its habitat; at Jemeluk Bay, direct beach access for snorkeling.
When choosing a theme, it is helpful to distinguish between Amlapura and the wider destination: on one hand are the palace, temple and festival associated with the city; on the other, the examples range from architectural history and rituals to agriculture and underwater life.
