Sea angling is considered Tálknafjörður’s biggest tourist attraction. Those who want to explore the town and its immediate surroundings on foot will find six trails in the Bifröst system, through woodland, marshland, scree slopes, along rivers, and through ravines and heathland. The routes vary considerably in length, duration and difficulty; there is also a swimming pool in town, natural hot pools nearby, and a publicly displayed work of art.

Hiking in the Bifröst system

The nearby Bifröst hiking system is located above Tálknafjörður. Its marked trails have been adapted in many places to make them easier to access. However, the system is still under development and calls for caution; conditions and markings may change. So check local conditions before setting out.

  • Vetrarbrautin: This easy trail is 2 kilometers long, takes 45 minutes and climbs 70 meters. It leads through the wooded slope of Bæjarfjall and offers views over the town and fjord.
  • Tungufell: This easy, 4-kilometer trail is listed as taking 1 hour, with 140 meters of elevation gain. It leads to a cairn marker above the town and returns via small waterfalls.
  • Söðullinn: This easy circular hike is 4.5 kilometers long. It is listed as taking 1 hour 30 minutes, with 80 meters of elevation gain.
  • Þvergil: This moderately difficult route covers 8.5 kilometers, takes 3 hours and has 420 meters of elevation gain. A rope assists with the climb at the end of the ravine.
  • Geitárhorn: This moderately difficult trail follows an old route between Tálknafjörður and Bíldudalur, covering 7.5 kilometers and 350 meters of elevation gain. The listed duration is 3 hours.
  • Bæjarfjall: This challenging route is also 8.5 kilometers long, takes 3 hours 30 minutes and has 430 meters of elevation gain. It follows the cliff edge to Rjúpnadalur and returns via Hrafnadalur.

For a shorter hike, Vetrarbrautin, at 45 minutes, and Tungufell, at one hour, are the shortest options described. Although Bæjarfjall and Þvergil are the same length, their listed durations and difficulty ratings differ: Bæjarfjall is challenging, while Þvergil is moderately difficult. These details help you fit each route into your day’s plans; they are no substitute for checking local conditions.

Pollurinn and the swimming pool

Pollurinn refers to natural hot pools near Tálknafjörður. Locals use them year-round to enjoy views across the fjord. The site is a few minutes’ drive from town, above Road 617; road conditions may vary in winter. There is a small hut at Pollurinn for changing and storing clothes. Entry is free, and a donation box is available; the donation arrangement may change. There are no toilets at the site, and camping is prohibited there. Check the local facilities before bathing.

The swimming pool in Tálknafjörður has a 25-meter outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a sauna, a cold-water pool, a baby pool and a water slide. Check the current facilities before your trip. This makes the natural pools nearby and the swimming pool in town two distinct options for spending time in the water.

Art and regional cuisine

Jón Júlí BA 157 is displayed as a sculpture in Tálknafjörður. The boat was built in Fáskrúðsfjörður in 1955. The year and place of construction give the artwork a specific connection to the boat’s history, without requiring a lengthy visit.

Nearby, Café Dunhagi serves regional cuisine featuring fresh local fish, Icelandic lamb and vegetarian specialties. Homemade bread and desserts are also available. The café operates seasonally; check its current opening status before your trip.

Camping and planning your accommodation

The Tálknafjörður campsite offers toilets and showers, hot and cold water, laundry, cooking and barbecue facilities, electricity, a wastewater disposal station for tanks, and Wi-Fi. It operates seasonally; check the individual facilities again before your trip, too.
