Nagyrécse between nature and a storytelling park

A large tree in the garden of Inkey Castle and the TELE-KA-LAND Fairy-Tale Park give Nagyrécse two distinct features: nature and story-inspired, playful elements. There is also a challenging cycling loop through the area and the nearby Szent-László Church. When planning your trip, you can weigh up the park offerings and sights on the one hand, and a longer cycling activity on the other.

The TELE-KA-LAND Fairy-Tale Park features the characters Mátyás király, Kiskakas gyémánt félkrajcárja and Piroska. There is also an information board, an interactive storytelling board, an Amőba game, a photo spot and a puzzle. Storytelling motifs sit alongside playful and interactive elements. This makes the park a clearly defined stop for anyone interested in these characters and forms of storytelling.

The castle garden offers a different highlight: it is home to a large sequoia species, believed to be several hundred years old. The tree links the name of Inkey Castle with a distinctive natural feature in Nagyrécse. This creates a contrast with the Fairy-Tale Park, without requiring the two places to appeal to the same interests.

Cycling loop and nearby sight

The 40-kilometre cycling loop runs from Nagykanizsa through Nagyrécse, Galambok, Zalakaros and Kisrécse, before returning to Nagykanizsa. It is considered challenging. Its length and difficulty are important factors when deciding whether the loop suits your cycling plans. It is advisable to check the current route before setting off.

The Szent-László Church, a separate sight for culture-minded travellers, is also near Nagyrécse. The church and the cycling loop represent different options to weigh up when planning your trip: a sight or a tour with a set distance and a challenging character.

Zala as a broader travel destination

The wider travel destination of Zala offers additional themes that vary across the region. The Zalai Borvidék stretches across the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It encompasses two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. This makes it a wide-ranging theme, while Nagyrécse offers its own locally named sights and activities.

The Kis-Balaton also offers a different landscape perspective in Zala: it is the county’s largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. Landscape and literature are thus intertwined here, while the size and protected status also give the area its own regional identity.

At the Kápolnapuszta Bivalyrezervátum, visitors can use a 1.5-kilometre walking trail with rest areas and lookout points. During opening hours, visitors are welcome to pet the tame animals every day. The Water Buffalo Festival is also held there every year in May or June; the exact date may vary from year to year. Check the event dates for your travel year.

Other regional examples focus on culture and technology. At the Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó, you can see a 390-centimetre overshot waterwheel mechanism in operation. The Festetics kastély in Keszthely is Hungary’s fourth-largest castle and has 101 rooms. Together with Nagyrécse’s Inkey Castle Garden, these places offer a variety of castle and cultural experiences across the wider travel destination of Zala, without implying that they form a single visitor route.
