Zalabaksa lies in the northern part of the Lenti Basin, 11 kilometres north of Lenti and 30 kilometres southeast of Zalaegerszeg. Main Road 86 runs through the village. The Roman Amber Road, an important military and trade route, followed the line of this present-day main road. This brings clear geographical orientation and a historical transport connection together along the same road. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up three local themes: the historic road, the waterscape and the annual competitions. Each offers a different focus for a stay.
Annual Competitions in Zalabaksa
A competition in threshing and tying rye straw is held every year in Zalabaksa. A competition involving workhorse-drawn teams is also held annually. The competitions are clearly distinct: one focuses on rye straw, the other on driving a team drawn by workhorses. Together, they show two different aspects of traditional ways of working: processing rye straw and driving with workhorses. If you are planning your trip around a competition, check the date of the event in advance.
The Kerka and Baksa-tĂł
The Kerka stream is an important watercourse in Zalabaksa. It also forms the boundary between the Hetés and Göcsej landscape regions. The Baksa-tó fishing lake is in Zalabaksa beside Main Road 86, between the Kerka and the Cupi stream. This gives you two distinct connections to the water: the stream as a watercourse and landscape feature, and Baksa-tó as a named fishing lake. If you are planning to fish at the lake, check the current access conditions in advance.
The Tomb and Kézművesház
Kósa Annus’s grave in Zalabaksa is marked by a wrought-iron enclosure and a broken marble column. Kézművesház opened to the public in 2007. At the time, visitors could view and buy the handicrafts on display there. If you are planning a visit today, check the current opening arrangements in advance. The two references offer different insights: the tomb is characterised by its two named design features, while the house is associated with the offer at the time of handicrafts to view and buy.
Zala as a Regional Context
The wider destination of Zala offers a view of other regionally rooted themes. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed in Zala on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. This structure shows the broad extent of the wine region.
The Kis-Balaton offers another perspective: it is Zala’s largest body of water, is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. Its landscapes also provide the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. The regional themes therefore range from wine country to a large protected area with literary associations. When making your decision, you can distinguish Zalabaksa’s own local attractions—the Amber Road, competitions, the Kerka and Baksa-tó—from these broader themes of Zala. If you are looking for a holiday rental, this distinction can help you choose the thematic setting you want for your stay.
